Mary Yantis passed away in Fort Worth Tuesday, December 31, after a brief illness.
Mary was born in Dublin September 18, 1934, the daughter of Sam and Ina Vaye Cowan. She graduated from Dublin High School in 1952. She married Richard “Dick” Yantis in 1954 at First Baptist Church, Dublin. They were married 61 years before his death from Alzheimer’s complications in 2016.
Mary studied at John Tarleton Agriculture College in Stephenville, Texas, the University of Texas at Austin, the University of Texas at Arlington and graduated with an education degree from Texas Christian University in 1963. Her first year of teaching was at Trimble Technical High School in Fort Worth. Her teaching fields were English and social studies. She delighted in teaching American and Texas History to students at Arlington’s Bowie and Martin High Schools, and especially loved her two stints of teaching at Arlington High School. She retired from teaching in 1995.
Mary made many friends and touched many lives through her volunteer work with Fielder Road Baptist Church, Arlington, First Baptist Church, Dublin, Rotary Club of Dublin and the Dublin Historical Society. She served as a lifelong cheerleader for Dublin – from Keep Dublin Beautiful, to new businesses, to the new Dublin High School, to the Dublin Historical Museum, the Grist Mill and park, the Ben Hogan Museum and the Little Church on Grafton,and the Thursday Club. Her bi monthly column for the Dublin Citizen was titled Museum Matters, and she referred to herself as “The Museum Lady.”
Her love of history took her traveling throughout the country. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Daughters of the Republic of Texas.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Dick, her son, Mike, her parents and one brother, James Cowan.
She is survived by two children and their spouses, Susan and Tom Martin, Dan and Tami Yantis, and daughter-in-law Melissa Yantis; grandson and spouse Jon and Kandace O’Toole, and grandchildren Catherine, Elizabeth and Eric Yantis; great-grandchildren Harrison and Ainsleigh O’Toole; and a host of cousins and friends.
If desired, memorials may be given to the Dublin Historical Society, First Baptist Church of Dublin or a church or charity of donor’s choice.

Service Details

Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 4, from 5 – 7 p.m. at the Harrell Funeral Home in Dublin. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 5, at the First Baptist Church of Dublin.
