Texans rout UT Permian Basin by 22 for fourth straight win

STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton men’s basketball continued its hot streak with an 80-58 rout over UT Permian Basin, giving the Texans a season-high four straight wins and its most lopsided conference victory of the season on Thursday in Wisdom Gym.

The Texans improve to 9-7 overall and 5-5 in the Lone Star Conference as they’ve now won five of the last six games.

The Texans had a trio of 15-point scorers, including a career-high 19 points and seven rebounds from Clashon Gaffney to lead the Texans. Josh Hawley and Randall Broddie each scored 15 points while Hawley added nine rebounds and Broddie totaled five boards and a game-high four assists. The Texan offense shot 52-percent from the floor, including 10 3-pointers in the win.

Tarleton had its most dominate half of the season as the Texans shot a blistering 61-percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes of play and held UTPB (11-8, 4-6) to only 28-percent shooting. During the stretch the Texans drilled six 3-pointers and forced the Falcons into 11 turnovers that turned into 15 points. For the game, the Texans limited the Falcons to 38-percent shooting, 17 turnovers and held them to 29 points below their season average.

A pair of double-digit shutout runs highlighted the Texans hot start, as they posted a 15-0 run and held the Falcons scoreless over a seven-minute span to lead 19-5 to open the game. Clashon Gaffney had 10 points during the run, including shooting a perfect 4-4 from the floor and making both free throws.

The Falcons made three straight 3-pointers to put a dent in the deficit, but the Texans answered with a 12-0 run over the final two minutes to close the half and lead 47-24 at the break.
In the second half, the Texans’ hot shooting continued. After the Falcons drained five 3’s to cut the deficit to 11, the Texans responded with an 11-0 run over the next four minutes to push the advantage up to 22, a lead they’d never let under 17 the rest of the way. Tarleton’s largest lead grew to 24 on Devin Bethely’s layup with 5:50 remaining. Bethely finished with five points and four assists. Isaiah Range gave the Texans six points, giving the starters 60 of the 80 points.

Zach Naylor led all players off the bench with nine points and six rebounds. Dexter Johnson hit a pair of 3’s for six points and Isaiah Boling had three points while Jaraan Lands added two points.

Tarleton will look to extend its winning streak to five games at home against Western New Mexico on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 4 p.m. in Wisdom Gym.
