Texans Top Rattlers on the Road, Take Over Top Spot in LSC Division

SAN ANTONIO – The Tarleton women’s basketball team (15-5, 9-5 LSC) dominated the floor Saturday afternoon, defeating divisional rival St. Mary’s (9-10, 8-7 LSC) by 15, 70-55. With the win, the Texans move to the top of their Lone Star Conference division with a 5-1 record. 

The Texans shot 52.1% from the field and are now 13-0 when shooting over 40%. Tarleton forced 20 St. Mary turnovers and scored 20 points off them. 

Mackenzie Hailey and Alexa Hoy led the Texans in scoring with 13 points each. The senior tallied three assists and a steal in the game, while the junior recorded two rebounds, a steal, and an assist.

Tarleton’s bench tallied 28 points, led by Marissa Escamilla with nine. Jasmine Bailey secured a career-high of seven points off 50% shooting. 

Tarleton got out to an early 7-0 lead and forced turnovers on St. Mary’s two opening possessions to start the match-up. A three-point-play from Hoy put the Texans up 10-4 at the midway point of quarter one. A layup from Escamilla pushed the Tarleton lead to double-digits, ending the first quarter with a 23-13 score. The Texans shot 60% in the first 10 minutes of play. 

The Texans were held scoreless through the first three minutes of the second quarter. The drought ended with back-to-back jumpers from Hailey, keeping the Tarleton advantage in double-digits, 27-17. St. Mary’s cut the lead to seven with three minutes left in the half, but Hoy answered back with a contested three to put the Texans up 32-22. The Texans held the ten-point lead into halftime, 38-28.

In the first half, the Texans shot 51.7% (15-29) from the field. Hoy led the team with 10 points, while Lucy Benson recorded two steals and three assists in the opening quarters. The Tarleton advantage was as high as 12 in the first half. 

A Kylie Collins three off a Rattlers turnover kept the Texans comfortable with a 12-point advantage, 45-33, early in the third. Tarleton continued to add their lead, going on a 9-0 run to go up 16, 49-33, midway through the quarter. Bailey completed a three-point-play to put the Texans up 17, 54-37. The Texans held onto their comfortable lead into the final quarter, 57-42.

The Texan lead went over 20 points at the seven-minute mark of the final quarter with a Callie Boyles layup, 63-42. The purple advantage was as high as 22 in the final 10 minutes. Head coach Misty Wilson cleared the bench in the final quarter, allowing playing time for every Tarleton player.

Collins (8), Kandyn Faurie (7), Benson (4), Guillory (4), Boyles (4), and Erin Brumley (1) rounded out the scoring for the Texans.

The Texans will return home next weekend for two conference match-ups. First, Tarleton will face Midwestern State on Thursday, February 6th at 5:30 p.m. The Texans will then face Cameron at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. Saturday’s match-up will be a Max Point Game (500 points) in the Tarleton Sports App and will celebrate Basketball Alumni Weekend.
