STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton Athletics has announced that Blake Burns of Texan Baseball and Marissa Escamilla of Texan Women’s Basketball are the February recipients of the ‘Tarleton Student-Athletes of the Month’ award, presented by The Grove.

The student-athlete of the month is selected based on the all-around student-athlete for one male and one female. The student-athlete will show effort and excellence in academics, leadership, civility, dedication to the team, campus involvement, community service, and the ability to serve as role models for current and future Tarleton State University students and student-athletes.

To be eligible for the award, the student-athlete must be nominated by their head coach or athletic administrator and maintain a grade point average of 2.75 or better. Only in-season athletes are eligible for the award each month.

Burns has been one of the best hitters in all of NCAA Division II baseball over the first month of the season. The Texans went 8-5 during the month of the February with Burns hitting .511. The senior from Keller has gone 24-for-47 over the last 13 games with six home runs and 21 RBI, including a nine RBI performance against UT Permian Basin that garnered him an LSC Player of the Week honor. His nine RBI against UTPB on February 8 ties him for the second-most RBI in a single game in program history.

Marissa Escamilla has been a huge spark off the bench for Tarleton Women’s Basketball during the month of February. The sophomore from Burnet has delivered four double-digit scoring performances off the bench, led by her 14-point outing against St. Mary’s in Wisdom Gym last week. For the month of February, she has led the Texans to a 4-2 record and is averaging 9.3 points and 5.2 rebounds in a crucial reserve role.

Once selected as student-athlete of the month, the recipients are eligible to be selected for Tarleton Student-Athlete of the Year award at the end of the season. The yearly award will be recognized at the beginning of the following fall semester.
