LAWTON, Okla. – Tarleton’s offense scored at will in the first game of Saturday’s twin bill and the Texans split the doubleheader with Cameron.
Game 1: Tarleton 22, Cameron 4
Tarleton came out swinging and put 16 runs across before the Aggies managed to plate a single run and the Texans cruised to a 22-4 win in game one.
Blake Burns drove in the first run of the game on a two-out RBI single to left before London Green cashed in for a two-run triple in the opening frame to give the Texans a 3-0 lead. After a shutdown inning from Hunter Thomas in the first Tarleton poured it on with back-to-back six-run innings in the second and third.
With two outs in the inning, Tyler Fowler kept the second inning alive with a single and then Wade Raburn (2B), Corey Young (1B) and Burns (2B) followed up with three straight RBI hits. Tarleton loaded the bases after and Cameron unloaded them with a three-run throwing error to extend the lead to 9-0.
The third inning saw a similar fate for Cameron as Tarleton scored two on a sacrifice fly and a bases-loaded walk before a misplay in centerfield with the bases loaded allowed four runs to come across and extend the lead out to 15-0. Corey Young drove in one in the fourth on an RBI double to extend things out to the 16-0 mark.
After Cameron got their only runs of the game in a four-run fifth inning, Tarleton tacked on three runs each in the final two innings to bring the game to its final score. Of those final six runs, three came by way of RBI singles and the other three came on bases-loaded walks.
Wade Raburn and Blake Burns led the offense with a career day at the plate, each going 4-for-4 at the plate. Raburn accounted for four runs scored while Burns touched home plate five times. Young, Fowler and Cody Vannoy each had two hits while Green and Rhett Gallagher had one hit each.
Hunter Thomas earned the win on the bump with five innings of work before giving way to John Bridgeman for the final two innings. Both pitchers struck out five.
Game 2: Cameron 10, Tarleton 4
Tarleton couldn’t overcome a seven-run second inning and dropped the third game of the series to the Aggies.
Cameron put up seven in the second. Tarleton tried to claw back but couldn’t produce a shutout inning after each scoring frame. Tarleton scored one in the third when Rhett Gallagher scored on a passed ball, but the Aggies answered with one in their half of the inning to keep the deficit at seven.
Again in the sixth, Tarleton attempted a rally by putting up three on a bases-clearing double by Dean Frew. However, the Aggies once again answered with runs of their own in the ensuing half inning by plating two to bring the game to its final score.
Blake Burns and London Green each had two hits while Tyler Fowler, Cody Vannoy, Zach Mesa and Frew had one each. Jon Law, Devon Patel and Michael Pilato combined for the six innings of work on the mound.
Tarleton will look to salvage a series split with the Aggies tomorrow at 1 p.m. in Lawton.
