Top four flights shine in singles as Tarleton upsets No. 18 Florida Southern

LAKELAND, Fla. – Tarleton Tennis earned its biggest win of the season by upsetting their first nationally-ranked opponent of the season. The top four players in the Texan lineup delivered in a 4-3 win over No. 18 Florida Southern Thursday.

After Florida Southern took the doubles point despite a win from Alicia Barbaroux and Faustine Palatte, the Mocs took a 2-0 lead in the match with a win in the No. 5 flight before the Texans turned up the heat.

Palatte got Tarleton on the board with a win in the No. 4 flight (6-1, 6-1) and then Alicia Barbaroux and Celia Vaudiau gave Tarleton a 3-2 edge by winning the top two matches, respectively. Barbaroux won the No. 1 match 6-3, 6-3 and Vaudiau won the No. 2 flight 6-2, 6-0.

The Mocs answered with a win in the No. 6 spot but Nathalie Ulander delivered the final strike for the Texans with a thrilling 6-3, 7-5 finish in the No. 3 spot to complete the upset.

“Today’s match radiated excitement and the girls dominated in singles action” said head coach Elianne Douglas-Miron. “I was very proud to witness the tremendous week Alicia had. She came to play and showcased her grit and leadership on our team. I am very proud of the fight this team showed and delighted to end this trip on a high note.”

The Texans were originally scheduled to begin Lone Star Conference action against UT Tyler in Orlando, Fla. tomorrow but the Lone Star Conference has suspended all contests by member institutions until March 30 due to coronavirus concerns.
