Garry David Steele, age 74, passed away on Saturday, March 14, 2020, in Comanche, Texas, surrounded by his loving family and fur baby, Luigi.

He was born on September 21, 1945, in Gorman, Texas, to James Hillary and Mildred Irene (Hartman) Steele. On July 21, 1992, he was united in marriage to Marlene Norton in Lubbock, Texas. Garry was a loving husband, father, and Grampy. He was a long time farmer. Garry worked in several places starting at a young age. He worked at the movie theater with PaPa Jim while in high school. Early in his career he was a branch manager at the Interstate Securities Company. He also ran a go-kart track in his younger life as well as coached Peewee baseball and he took enjoyment in repairing bicycles for local children in his spare time. He met his wife Marlene at a conference while working as a dispatcher for the Comanche Police Department. Garry was a Comanche County Commissioner, Pct 1, and a member of the Emergency Management System. In retirement he enjoyed being chairman of the board for the Comanche County Museum where he accomplished many things. The museum sign that towers over the museum was hand drawn, cut out and painted by Garry for future generations to enjoy. In 2018 he was named Comanche’s Man of the Year. Between all of this he was a mason, carpenter, welder, mechanic and countless other skills. Garry was a very smart and wise man but humble as well. If there was a task or an event that needed to be done, he made it happen. Not only did he make it happen he made sure it had all the extras to make it a success. He taught his children the value of hard work and the importance of being kind and respectful. He was a father that you could go to if you needed guidance and wanted the truth, he did not sugar coat his answer and was usually right.

He is survived by his wife, Marlene Steele of Comanche; daughter, Sheri Cremonese and husband Guy of Temple; daughter, Rebekah Prather and husband Edward of Weatherford; son, David Steele and wife, Michelle of Carrolton; son, Mark Bunch and wife Mindi of Rhome; son, Chad Steele of Abilene; daughter, Shawna Brandon and husband Jason of Comanche; sister, Sandy Paul of Oklahoma; 22 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Hillary Steele and Mildred Irene (Hartman) Steele and sister, MaryJo Steele.

Service Details

Visitation will be held from 6 – 8 p.m. on March 17, 2020, at the Comanche Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on March 18, 2020, at Taylor’s Chapel in Comanche.
