John Denton passed away unexpectedly on March 19, 2020 at the age of 72.

John Preston Denton, son of Nila Marie Jones was born December 21, 1947 in Hico, TX. He was a graduate of Stephenville High School, and served in the United States Army for 2 years, after which his received his Bachelors Degree from Tarleton State University.

He spent 4 years running the horse program at Camp Carter YMCA followed by a year at Lena Pope Home. He spent the better of 47 years supporting and serving the world of rodeo as a judge and arena director. From his actions of encouragement and sportsmanship, as well as integrity, he has helped shaped the lives of literally hundreds, if not thousands of young boys and girls over the span of those 47 years.

Johnny “Papa” Denton was a devoted father, brother, grandfather and friend.

He is survived by his daughter, Anna Denton; son-in-law Damon Mayfield, son, Kenny Harrison; brother, James Denton; grandkids, Myles Mayfield and wife Kaydee Mayfield, Maegen Fraley and husband Joey Fraley, Christopher Harrison, Clayton Harrison, and Jessa Bamber. fiance Rhonda Chew, boys Dagen & Jonah; nieces DeAnne Denton, Tina Phelps and husband Alvin Phelps; great nieces Hayley and Erin Phelps; former daughter-in-law Leslie Harrison, along with many other family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by daughter, Marjorie Mayfield, mother, Nila Jones, grandparents Daddy (Hub Alexander) and Nannie (Jossie Belle Alexander), and sister-in-law Shirley Denton.

Due to current COVID-19 related restrictions, we will be having a private burial. Please know we are planning a public celebration of life to take place as soon as all restrictions are lifted.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that you kindly make a donation in assistance with funeral costs. All donations can be made at Mills County Bank in Hico, TX in memory of John Denton.
