STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton head coach Billy Gillispie announced the signing of Killeen Ellison High School guard Shamir Bogues to a National Letter of Intent to join Tarleton Men’s Basketball next season.

Bogues, a 6-foot-4 combo guard from Killeen, Texas, will join the Texans after an all-state career at Ellison. Bogues chose Tarleton over offers from Stephen F. Austin, South Dakota State, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Incarnate Word.

“I’m really excited to create a new era for Tarleton basketball,” said Bogues. “I can’t wait to meet my new teammates and all the coaches.”

During Bogues’ senior year at Ellison, he led the Eagles to a 35-5 record and won the District 12-6A championship. Bogues and the Eagles advanced to the 6A Regional Finals while being ranked No. 3 in the state by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches (TABC). As a senior, Bogues averaged 16 points – including a career-high 33-point effort – 4 rebounds, 4 steals and 2 assists. Bogues was named the District 12-6A MVP, TABC 6A All-Region, and TABC 6A All-State. As a junior, Bogues was the District 12-6A Offensive MVP and named first team all-district and all-region. He was also all-district as a sophomore.

“We are very excited to have Shamir join the Tarleton basketball family,” said Gillispie. “Shamir is one of the best two-way players in the state of Texas with an unbelievable desire to compete. He is a tremendous athlete with a high basketball IQ that can score the ball in a multitude of ways. Shamir is a winner that will make an impact in our program right away. The fans are going to have a good time watching Shamir play.”

Division I college basketball runs in the Bogues family as Shamir’s older brother, Shannon, played for Stephen F. Austin and was a two-time All-Southland Conference selection that currently plays for the Milwaukee Bucks’ G-League team, the Wisconsin Herd. Bogues’ high school coach at Ellison, Alfredo Jones, had the opportunity to coach both brothers in high school and said the Texans landed a steal in the younger Bogues.

“Shamir is a great kid that’s going to play hard on both ends of the floor and you can really depend on him to do what you ask him to do to help the team win,” said Jones. “All those intangibles that coaches look for, Shamir has all of that. Shamir takes a lot of pride in his defense and playing hard. Tarleton is getting a steal in Shamir Bogues.”

Bogues also spent last spring and summer playing for Drive Nation in Nike’s Elite Youth Basketball League, which is owned and operated by former NBA All-Star Jermaine O’Neal. Bogues averaged 10.5 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.9 assists playing against the country’s top talents. O’Neal, a 17-year NBA Veteran, was quoted in The Season Ticket about Bogues, saying: “Shamir is a coach’s dream. He has attributes that you don’t see a lot of in today’s amateur athletes. He works incredibly hard, is super coachable and does things wholeheartedly without complaints. He reminds me a lot of Rajon Rondo, because of his ability to direct and take control of the offense and defend as a point guard.”

Bogues becomes Gillispie’s eighth recruit to sign with the Texans, joining Tre Gipson, Shakur Daniel, Heritier Ngalamulume, Caleb Starks, Freddy Hicks, Joey Madimba, and Caleb Golden.
