STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton’s Georgia Capell and Jordan Withrow have been selected to the Academic All-America Division II Softball team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Despite the cancellation of spring competition during COVID-19, CoSIDA continued its sponsorship of the Academic All-America awards program. Student-athletes were selected based on career statistics. Capell was named to the Academic All-America First Team while Withrow claimed third-team recognition.
Capell becomes the first two-time Academic All-American in Tarleton Softball history and is one of 13 repeat performers on this year’s list. Twenty-seven of the 33 members of the 2020 CoSIDA Academic All-America Division II Softball teams have at least a 3.80 GPA, with six student-athletes maintaining a perfect 4.00 GPA. The 11 members of the first team have an average GPA of 3.86.
Capell has found great success in just two and a half seasons at Tarleton. The slugger from Midlothian is already the program’s all-time home run leader (42) and has been named an NFCA All-American in each of her first two seasons at Tarleton. She is the only Texan to be named an NFCA All-American as a freshman and in multiple seasons. Prior to the abrupt end of the softball season, Capell was hitting .442 with seven home runs and 17 RBI in 23 games this season.
Withrow, who was just named a Lone Star Conference Scholar-Athlete, is the league’s back-to-back Academic Player of the Year and a two-time All-American. She is a two-time Easton/NFCA All-American Scholar Athlete and finished her career as the Tarleton leader in wins (71) and strikeouts (676). The right-hander from Trenton was 12-3 with a 1.63 ERA when the season came to an end in March and had just thrown her third career no-hitter in a 3-0 victory over No. 2 UT Tyler in Tarleton’s home opener prior to the season’s abrupt end in March.
The Lone Star Conference had three total members on the CoSIDA All-America team, with Tarleton’s duo of Capell and Withrow leading the way.
Tarleton is in its final month as a member of the Lone Star Conference following a 26-year run as a league member in NCAA Division II. Tarleton State University will join the Western Athletic Conference (WAC), FCS Football (Independent) and NCAA Division I on July 1, 2020.
