John Wayne Allen, kind, honest, trustworthy, tough are just a few of many words to describe a great man that has gone on to be with his Lord. John passed away at home near Lingleville on July 24, 2020.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Monday, July 27, 2020 at Stephenville Funeral Home Chapel with Buddy Payne officiating. Burial will follow at Lingleville West End Cemetery in Lingleville. Visitation will be 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM Sunday at Stephenville Funeral Home.
John Allen was a servant of the Lord his whole life. He was born November 5, 1958 to Charles Luther Allen and Hazel Crabtree Allen, and lived at the family farm in Lingleville until they moved to Stephenville when he was seven. He graduated from Stephenville High School in 1977, and then received a degree in Animal Science from Tarleton State University in 1981.
He married his high school sweetheart and soulmate, Amy Aldridge Allen, on February 1982, and they had a wonderful 38 years together.
John lived his life outdoors. John worked for 29 years for the Texas Agriculture Extension Service as a county agriculture agent in the Del Rio, Texas area serving Val Verde, Bandera, and Edwards counties, where he and Amy raised their beautiful daughters, Cassie and Laura. He was the best father his daughters could ever ask for. He loved them fiercely, and raised them to be strong, resilient Christian women, who married men he loved as well.
John specialized in sheep and goat production, and worked extensively with the 4-H helping youth with livestock projects and judging contests. He coached four National Champion Wool Judging teams. He retired in 2010, and returned back to the family land at Lingleville. He remained active in agriculture and worked with several stockshows, including being superintendent of the lamb and goat market show at the State Fair of Texas.
He was an adventurer, and cowboy at heart, and loved hunting, fishing, his cows, being with his grandkids. John and Amy were able to spend the last ten years enjoying retirement by traveling, cruising and seeing the beauty of God’s creation. John was happiest when he was hiking the backcountry, or exploring a new island, with Amy’s hand in his.
The grandchildren adored PaPoo, and he will live on in dear numerous memories of hunting, fishing, watching Gunsmoke and picnics in the treehouse he built for them.
John was a firm believer in obedience to God’s word, and was a member of the Church of Christ. He served as an elder of the Northside Church of Christ in Del Rio, and the Westside Church of Christ in Stephenville. He loved his church family as his own. He served the Westside Church of Christ congregation fervently until the day he gained his reward.
Left to cherish his memory forever, and remember the Godly strong man, and example that he was, are his wife, Amy; daughters and husbands, Cassie and Pat Penn of Lufkin, Texas and Laura and Andy Calhoun of DeLeon, Texas, and seven grandchildren, John Allen Penn, Seth Andrew Penn, Kylie Ann Penn, Ruthie Grace Penn, Gage Wayne Calhoun, Evi Joann Calhoun, and Grady Kyle Calhoun. Also, his parents, Charles and Hazel Allen of Stephenville; sister, Charlsie and Clint Sterry of DeSoto; and brother, David and Amy Allen of Saginaw; sister in law, Julie and David Phillips of Stephenville; and nieces, nephews, and friends too numerous to count.
