Corbin Poston booted a 49-yard field goal to lift Stephenville to a 10-7 scrimmage win over Glen Rose at Tarleton’s Memorial Stadium Thursday.

“We did some things well, and there are many areas where we need to clean things up,” Coach Sterling Doty said. “We need those live reps because there are some things you just can’t recreate in practice.”

The two teams ran several first and second-team series before playing two live quarters with a running clock.

There are a couple of things the Jackets don’t want to recreate as defenders got caught out of alignment several times early, and the first-team offense struggled to keep a handle on the football.

“We had some issues with our blocking upfront and making sure we had people where they needed to be,” Doty said.

The good news with all that being the problems Stephenville encountered are all “coachable.”

“There’s no doubt the problems we had are correctable, and we will be looking at film Friday morning and working on those things right away,” Doty said. “You get into these scrimmages without any scouting or video of your opponent and come out and run your base offense.”

It’s been a long time since Stephenville went into a season without a clear cut candidate to be the starter at quarterback, and senior Gavin Rountree and sophomore Ryder Lambert both had strong efforts.

“That’s still something that is up in the air right now, and we will be naming a starter before we head into Sweetwater,” Doty said.

Rountree tossed a touchdown in the live quarter of action, and Lambert pulled down the ball several times to make things happen with his feet.
Despite looking a little gassed, the Jackets executed the final quarter very well and used the legs of Kason Phillips to gather up first downs. Phillips capped a sustained drive with a 12-yard scoring run.

Stephenville opens the 2020 season with a trip to the historic Sweetwater Mustang Bowl, which should prove to be an eye-opening experience for the Jackets with its close confines.
