There will be many essential wins at Dublin’s Bob and Norma Cervetto Field, and the Lions got one of those Friday as they christened their new stadium with a 33-7 win against long-time rival DeLeon.

Early on, it was the Andy Dickson led Bearcats that had the momentum as they scored on their second possession as Trey Lopez broke free for a 12-yard scored and booted the PAT to put DeLeon on top 7-0 with three minutes left in the first quarter.

Dublin countered with a 26-yard scoring run from Kyler Madruga, who entered the game in the second and would stay in the Lions’ backfield to score seven and six yards in the second half.

Kyler Madruga dives into the end zone for his third touchdown of the night as he rushed for 120 yards on 16 carries.

While Madruga was busy pounding out 120 yards on 16 carries, quarterback Chris Teten was busy hooking up with receivers Christian Ramirez (5-109, 1TD) and Dalan Rasberry (4-71) as he passed for 16-27-1—236.

DeLeon’s struggle wasn’t just a lack of numbers but cramping that started in the second quarter and continued throughout the game.

The Bearcats’ cramping problems probably didn’t come from the heat or a lack of conditioning, but instead, it was reported some players had tanked up on peanut-butter based snacks, which can lead to cramps.

Chris Teten was 16-27-1 for 236 yards in his first varsity start.

Regardless of the reason, Dickson’s squad was a different team in the second half, while Dublin hummed along like a well-oiled machine.

Dublin opened the second half with a sustained drive and a 27-yard scoring pass from Teten to Ramirez. Madruga punched in two more scores before Dublin’s No. 2 squad came into the game and finished the night with a 14-yard run by Dillon Coronado.

Trey Lopez rushed for 92 yards on 12 carries and scored a touchdown before falling victim to cramping.
