Jackets prepare for Brownwood without bye week

Gavin Rountree’s adjustment from All-District wide receiver to quarterback looks complete after throwing four touchdowns running for two more in Stephenville’s 46-33 upset win over No. 3 Dumas.

Rountree threw for 291 yards, had no interceptions, and rushed for 81 yards. Those are the glittering numbers, but the most important ones to the Yellow Jackets are holding the formerly undefeated Demons to 12 first-half points.
Trace Morrison was the Jackets’ top receiver with four catches for 139 yards and two scores including a 96-yard touchdown. Junior wideout Coy Eakin pulled in three passes for 48 yards and a score. Corbin Poston nailed a pair of field goals for the Jackets and had a long kick of 41-yards.

Kason Phillips rushed for 51 yards and caught a TD pass that covered 48 yards.
The Jackets (2-3) needed the momentum of a win after having been dealt with two straight losses, including a game that slipped away in the final minute.
Momentum is exactly what Stephenville needs with COVID-19 concerns wiping out their upcoming bye-week in the event any rescheduling is required. Instead of getting a week off to heal up and prepare for district play, Stephenville now faces Brownwood (2-3).
The two teams may have matching records, but Stephenville has played a brutal preseason that has included battles against No. 1 Lampasas, No. 3 Dumas and No. 8 Melissa.
