Jackets stampede over Mustangs 49-13

With 7:48 remaining in the first quarter, Stephenville had all the points it needed to top Life Waxahachie, but for good measure, the Yellow Jackets finished the action with a 49-13 win over the Mustangs.

**Kason Philips saw limited use, but racked up 2 TDs and 70 yards on just nine carries.**

Topping off the Jackets nights was the news Midlothian Heritage was a surprise winner over No. 3 Waco La Vega, which sets up a potential three-way tie for the District 5-4A championship.
For that to happen, Stephenville (5-4, 3-1) will need to top Midlothian next Friday when they host the Jaguars (7-2, 3-0) at Tarleton’s Memorial Stadium.
Stephenville got into the end zone on its opening possession, with senior running back Kason Philips scoring the first of his two first-quarter touchdowns on a two-yard run.

The Mustangs’ shanked punt gave Stephenville a short field, and quarterback Gavin Rountree connected with Trace Morrison on a 26-yard scoring pass. Corbin Poston nailed the second of his seven extra-point kicks to make it a 14-0 game.
Waxahachie miscued its next punt when the deep snap went over the punter’s head, and Stephenville had another short drive to paydirt. Philips capped the 20-yard drive with a six-yard score.
A Stephenville fumble gave the Mustangs the ball at midfield, and busted coverage led to a 50-yard scoring pass to tighten up the score.

The Yellow Jackets responded quickly with Rountree finding Philips on a swing pass that turned into a 26-yard score, but Stephenville was penalized for holding and had to start over.
Rountree called his own number to get the Jackets into the end zone as he punched the ball over from three yards out.
The quarterback stayed in the pocket for Stephenville’s next two scores as he hit Reece Elston for a 15-yard strike and Coy Eakin for an 11-yard score.
Leading 42-13 at the half, there wasn’t much for Coach Sterling Doty to do but send in the Jackets’ second-teamers to round out the game after Rountree finished out the scoring with a 27-yard run with 10:05 left in the third quarter.

**Gavin Rountree had three touchdowns passing and added two on the ground.**

Despite calling off the dogs early in the third quarter, Stephenville rolled up 550 yards of offense, with Rountree completing 17-of-21 passing for three TDs and 40 yards rushing and two more TDs.
Philips only carried nine times as he rolled up 70 yards and two scores.
