STEPHENVILLE — Tarleton State University has announced a graduate admissions agreement with Southwestern Oklahoma State University. High-achieving SOSU environmental chemistry and chemistry students will be guaranteed acceptance to Tarleton’s master of science in environmental science program.

Operated from the College of Science and Technology, the program is interdisciplinary and fully online. The pact takes effect immediately, allowing students to start in the spring.

The program offers built-in flexibility to suit the needs of students and their career paths within an array of related fields. With both thesis and non-thesis options, the degree works for students in any stage of their career.

“As our first memorandum of understanding with a regional university outside the state, this is a significant step for the growth and development of the environmental sciences program,” said program director Dr. Ryan Morgan, head of the Department of Chemistry, Geosciences and Physics, which houses the master of environmental science program.

Dr. Anne Egelston, Director for Tarleton’s Center for Environmental Studies, noted that Southwestern Oklahoma State is a regionally important institution in these fields. “This agreement allows SWOSU students to integrate quickly into our master’s program,” she said, “and we look forward to bringing more SWOSU students to our campus.”

Tarleton plans to develop similar agreements with other institutions in the region as part of its College of Graduate Studies.

Dr. Credence Baker, Dean of the College of Graduate Studies, said these types of transfer agreements are important, as they confirm a reputation for program collaborations, not only in North Texas but across state lines.

“SWOSU is well known for their quality chemistry programs,” he added, “and I am pleased to be able to welcome their bachelor’s graduates to our master’s of environmental science program.”

Additional MOUs and articulation agreements are being developed with several universities across Texas as Tarleton continues to cultivate programs that meet regional and state workforce needs.
