Walter Richard Mathis, 72, passed away on January 18, 2021 in Denton, Texas. He was born on January 4, 1949 in Dublin, Texas to his parents William Barksdale Mathis and Alta Olene (House) Mathis. Walter was married to Antoinette (Cheri) Mathis on February 10, 2015 in Stephenville, Texas. Walter retired from the Soil Conservation Service and served as a police officer at Tarleton State University and had worked at Rough Creek Lodge. He loved the Lord, his grandchildren, fishing, and hunting. Walter was a man of few words and was always calm and gentle. He was a member of Highland Baptist Church.

Walter is survived by his wife Antoinette Mathis of Dublin, Texas, his mother Olene Mathis, his son and daughter-in-law Derick and Melinda Mathis of North Richland Hills, Texas, his daughter and son-in-law Shenel and Adam Kanz of New Braunfels, Texas and his son Leslie Mathis of Dublin, Texas his grandchildren Kaden, Landon, Tristan Mathis, Shelby Marshall, Brady and Rylee Kanz, and Mackenzie Mathis, and seven more grandchildren, his brother Ronnie Mathis of Dublin, Texas, his sister Nancy Couch of Dublin, Texas, his step-daughters Raquel Queen Davis of Burleson, Texas and Reva Murray of Granbury, Texas and numerous other family members who will miss him dearly.

Graveside service will be held on Tues. Jan. 19, 2021 at 11:00am at the Round Grove Cemetery.
