Khaw records top-10 finish in Division I debut, Texans finish ninth at Islander Classic

CORPUS CHRISTI – Tarleton women’s golf came away with a ninth-place finish in its Division I debut at the Island Classic played at the Corpus Christi Country Club.

The Texans recorded a three-round score of 975 (+111) with individual rounds of 323-329-323. The Texans played 33 holes on Monday before the second round was called due to darkness and played the final 21 holes on Tuesday. Sam Houston topped the 11-team field with a score of 890 (+26) at the Par 72, 6,605-yard course. 

Overall, Tarleton totaled 116 pars and 18 birdies. The Texans were sixth in Par 3 scoring with an average score of 3.35 (+21) and also placed sixth in Par 5 scoring (5.42, +25).

Junie Khaw led the Texans on the individual leaderboard throughout the tournament, coming away with a top-10 finish and tying for eighth. Khaw carded a 229 (+13) with rounds of 75-77-77 for her 11th career top-10 finish. Overall, Khaw tallied a team-leading 29 pars and seven birdies. The seven birdies tied for third among the field.

The senior from Malaysia led all individuals in Par 5 scoring, shooting 3-under-par (4.75 average) and was also 2-over-par (3.17) on Par 3 scoring to tie for the team lead.

Sofia Rodriguez made the biggest jump of the day for the Texans, moving up nine spots on the leaderboard to tie for 41st but knocked 11 strokes off her scorecard in the final round compared to the first round. Rodriguez shot a 250 (+34) and had rounds of 88-85-77. Rodriguez matched Khaw in Par 3 scoring, netting a score of 3.17 (+2). The sophomore from Spain recorded 26 pars and a birdie.

Alejandra Cambronero finished tied for 43rd with a 251 (+35), carding rounds of 83-87-81. Marianella Moreschi’s 253 (+37) placed her tied for 47th and produced an 83-82-88 on the week. Beatrice Grise tied for 49th, posting rounds of 82-85-88 for a score of 255 (+39)

Tarleton will have two weeks off before heading south to play in the UTRGV Invitational at the McAllen Country Club on March 8-9.
