AUSTIN – Julia Wernet fired a complete-game, three-hit shutout for the Texans in the nightcap of Tarleton’s opening day at Red & Charline McCombs field in Austin. The Texans defeated Texas Southern 2-0 Friday night.

Game 1: #10 Texas 9, Tarleton 1 (6)
Tarleton struck first but the Longhorns answered last and the Texans suffered a 9-1 loss to No. 10 Texas in the first game Friday.

Georgia Capell led off the game with a double to the left-center gap and Destiny Crumpley didn’t waste the opportunity with an RBI single down the leftfield line to give the Texans their first lead over a nationally-ranked Division I opponent in program history.

The Horns would respond with two in the first and nine unanswered to take the win. Jordan Dickerson and Hallie Saintignan spread out two more hits over the remaining innings for Tarleton’s four hits of the game.

Tristan Bridges and Kallie Erwin were the first two Texans in the circle, but Makenzie Dunbar enjoyed a strong finish. Dunbar pitched the final 3.0 innings of work and allowed only two runs while posting the lone strikeout of the day.

Game 2: Tarleton 2, Texas Southern 0
In the nightcap, Wernet turned in yet another stellar pitching performance to lead the Texans into the win column for the eighth time this season with a 2-0 win over Texas Southern.

After the teams mirrored each other move-for-move in the first two innings of the softball-themed chess match, Capell sparked the offense with a two-out double in the top of the third. Saintignan didn’t let it go to waste as she singled in the field which moved to Capell to third, but a throwing error allowed Capell to cross for the first run of the game.

Texas Southern was primed to respond with a leadoff single in the third, but Wernet shut it down with three straight ground balls to keep the Tigers off the board.

In the following inning, Tarleton added an insurance run by capitalizing on a leadoff walk from Crumpley. Pinch-runner Bailee Riggs moved around to third and ultimately scored on a sacrifice fly from Dickerson to double the score at 2-0.

Wernet went three-up, three-down in the fourth but ran into a little trouble in the fifth. Texas Southern coaxed a one-out walk and moved to second when the ensuing batter grounded out to Dickerson. Then a single up the middle put the pressure on Texas Southern to break the goose egg, but Saintignan was having none of it. The junior centerfielder hosed the runner at the plate to end the inning and keep the shutout intact.

Wernet went three-up, three-down in the sixth and worked around a one-out double in the seventh to polish off her sixth pitching win of the season. En route to her sixth win of the season, the Tigers were nothing more than a few cool cats and kittens as she allowed a mere three hits and a walk in her complete-game masterpiece while striking out three.

The Texans return to action tomorrow in an altered format. The Texans will rematch No. 10 Texas at 9 a.m. and then play BYU in the final game of the weekend, weather permitting. The game against Texas will be live on the Longhorn Network while the BYU game will be on tape delay.
