ABILENE – Tarleton’s throwers earned the distinction of being the first track and field athletes to compete at a Division I meet on Friday at the Wes Kittley ACU Invitational on Friday in Abilene.

The group made the most of it, too, as the Texans posted five top-15 finishes in the shot put and hammer throw and had two athletes advance to the finals in the women’s shot put.

Marshae Davis was Tarleton’s highest-placing finisher in any event, claiming seventh place in the shot put with a throw of 39-07. Fellow sophomore Jeneka Jackson was not far behind, as she finished ninth and set a personal record in the event at 37-09.25.

Both Davis and Jackson now boast three top-10 finishes in the shot put in their Texan careers. Jackson was also Tarleton’s top performer in the women’s hammer throw. The Huntsville, Texas native took 13th in the event with a throw of 128-10 while Kristen Kuehler finished one spot behind (128-08, 14th).

The afternoon also featured a trio of Texan firsts. Freshmen Bonnie Clifton and Hailey Daniels-White made their Texan debuts in the shot put. Clifton’s throw of 35-02 earned her 15th place and Daniels-White finished 22nd (27-10). On the men’s side, sophomore Oscar Rodriguez competed in the hammer throw for the first time as a Texan and uncorked a heave of 154-07 to claim 11th place.

Tarleton will travel its full complement of athletes 105 miles west of Stephenville on Saturday for the third and final day of competition. Field events begin at 9:30 a.m. with the javelin while track events are scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
