SAN ANTONIO – Tarleton Softball dropped a midweek doubleheader on the road against Incarnate Word on Tuesday at H-E-B Field.

The Texans struggled to get their bats going in both games as Incarnate Word won the opener 1-0 and 6-0 in the doubleheader finale.

“We went through the motions offensively today and I’m embarrassed with these losses,” said head coach Mark Cumpian. “For 15 innings, we were very undisciplined and didn’t want to make any adjustments at the plate. At this level it doesn’t matter who you play, you have to show up and we did not today.”

Game 1: Incarnate Word 1, Tarleton 0 (8 innings)
The opening game was a pitchers’ duel and Julia Wernet delivered for the Texans, tossing all 7.2 innings of the game. Wernet gave up just four hits, allowing one run and striking out four. In the first seven innings of regulation, Wernet threw seven shutout innings, with just three hits, no walks and four strikeouts.

Wernet only allowed four singles and not a single UIW batter to reach past second base through the first seven innings. Wernet had four perfect innings where she retired the side in order, including a stretch of 12 straight Cardinals retired between the second and sixth innings.

The Tarleton offense out-hit Incarnate Word 5-4 in the game, led by Bailee Riggs’ 3-for-3 performance. Georgia Capell and Hallie Saintignan each had singles as well.

Tarleton had chances to score in the third inning with runners at the corners and in the fifth with runners at second and third but couldn’t drive home a run. The Texans left seven runners on base in the opener.

Incarnate Word spoiled Wernet’s shout out bid in extra innings with a walk-off RBI single in the eighth to win 1-0.

Game 2: Incarnate Word 6, Tarleton 0
Incarnate Word scored early and often, plating runs in the first, second, fourth and fifth innings to take game two over the Texans.

Tarleton managed four singles in the contest, led by Capell’s 2-for-3 game. Riggs and Katy Schaefer also had hits. The Texans had eight runners left on base in the game.

Incarnate Word scored six runs on nine hits in the game including three singles that led to RBIs and a solo home run in the fifth.

Tristan Bridges got the start for the Texans, throwing the first 4.1 innings before being relieved by Makenzie Dunbar in the fifth. Dunbar threw the final 1.2 innings, allowing only one hit and no runs during the outing.

Tarleton will head further south to play Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on the road on March 24 with games at 12 and 2 p.m.
