Rodriguez shoots 2-over at WAC Championship to lead Texans after round one

BOULDER CITY, Nevada – Tarleton’s Sofia Rodriguez is tied for 10th place to lead the Texans after the opening round of the WAC Championship at the Boulder Creek Golf Club.

Tarleton is not eligible to count on the team leaderboard in the WAC Championship due to being in the first year of transitioning to NCAA Division I. The Texans played as individuals on the player leaderboard as did fellow transitioning members California Baptist and Dixie State. Chicago State also played as individuals due to only having three active players.

New Mexico State leads the field after the first round, posting a 287 (-1). Grand Canyon follows in second with a 290 (+2). Seattle and Utah Valley are tied for third with a score of 297 (+9) and UTRGV is fifth with a 303 (+15). If Tarleton’s team score was counted they would have shot a 314 (+26).

Rodriguez fired a first-round score of 74 (+2) at the Par 72, 6,395-yard course. The sophomore tied for the team lead with 10 pars and three birdies. After bogeying the first hole, Rodriguez was 1-under on the next seven holes. She shot 1-over on the front nine and 1-over on the back nine. Payton Fehringer of Grand Canyon leads all individuals with a 69 (-3).

Junie Khaw shot a 77 (+5) and is tied for 23rd after 18 holes. Khaw was 4-over on the front nine but bounced back by carding a 1-over 37 on the back nine. Khaw tallied nine pars and a pair of birdies, both of which came on the back nine.

Marianella Moreschi carded an 81 (+9), Alejandra Cambronero followed with an 82 (+10) and Beatrice Grise rounded out the Texan lineup with an 83 (+11).

Tarleton will tee off in the second of three rounds on Tuesday at 10 a.m. CST
