Texans split Saturday doubleheader with Bears

GREELEY – Tarleton splits the Saturday doubleheader with Northern Colorado in a tough battle in game two.

Game 1: Tarleton 11, Northern Colorado 4
The Texans bats caught fire in the first game of the Saturday doubleheader while the combined pitching from Luke Baley and Justin Waltmon lifted Tarleton past Northern Colorado 11-4.

The Texans were able to capitalize in the top of the first after they loaded the bases and two passed balls brought two runners to get on the board first. Both teams went scoreless in the 2nd before the Bears brought four runs home in the bottom half of the third for the only runs, they recorded all game.

The Texans quickly answered with a five spot in the 4th. Bryan Aguilar drew a bases loaded walk to pick up a RBI before a bases clearing three RBI triple from Wade Raburn gave the Texans the lead again. Tyler Fowler brought in the fifth run of the inning with a single to right field that plated Raburn.

A solo shot from Ian Groves, his third of the season, over the left field fence in the 5th brought the Texans lead to 8-4. Burn brought in two more runs in the 6th on a double down the right field line and a pinch-hit single from Colby Feris in the 7th capped off the Texans win 11-4.

Raburn had a nearly perfect outing today going 4-for-5 at the plate with three RBI and three runs scored. Dean Frew, Groves and Burns each had two hits today with Burns recording two RBI. Feris and Frew each had a stolen base today and Frew had a game high two doubles.

Besides the four runs in the 4th for the Bears, Baley went 5.0 innings today with five strikeouts. Waltmon came in to relieve Baley allowing two hits and no runs in his 2.0 innings of work.

Game 2: Northern Colorado 6, Tarleton 5
Tarleton and Northern Colorado went back-and-forth in today’s second game trading runs and the lead for most of the game.

The Bears got on the board first in the bottom of the 1st scoring just one run. The Texans answered in the next two innings scoring two runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings. To get the scoring started in the 2nd was London Green who doubled to right center plating Burns. Feris then doubled down the left field line to bring in the second run of the season. In the 3rd inning Burns had a bases clearing two RBI double to bring the score to 4-1.

Northern Colorado got three runs back in the 3rd and 4th innings to tie things up at four.

Burns pushed the Texans to the lead again in the 5th inning with a solo home run to left field, it was his fifth homer of the season.

Getting two runs back in the 6th the Bears took a one run lead which led them to the win in game two of the day.

Burns led the team in game two going 2-for-3 at the plate, with three RBI and scored two runs. Green added another stolen base on the day bringing his season total to 12, the second best in the conference.

Bryce Hackett got the start on the mound going 5.1 innings with six strikeouts. Zach Poe closed things down on the mound allowing only one hit and striking out three in his 2.2 innings of work.

The Texans will look for the series split tomorrow as they take on the Bears in the series finale. The final game has been moved up to 11 a.m. CT due to weather.
