STEPHENVILLE – The spring semester of 2021 brought more adversity into college athletics than ever before.

Just in the athletic arenas, student-athletes battled weekly COVID testing, game uncertainty, cancellations, and the overlapping of all seasons into one semester. Academically speaking, the introduction of hybrid learning – mixing online and in-person classes – showed the resiliency of faculty, staff and students across the country at every level of academia.

Meanwhile, Tarleton entered its first season as an NCAA Division I institution and, despite all the adversity, boasted one of the best academic semesters in athletics history.

“I am extremely proud of our STUDENT-athletes for their record performance in the classroom. Scholastic achievement is paramount to the vision of our athletic department,” said Tarleton State University President Dr. James Hurley. “Vice President Lonn Reisman and his entire staff have done an incredible job leading us through our first NCAA Division I season of competition.”

Tarleton rostered 333 student-athletes over 12 NCAA sponsored programs and totaled a 3.11 departmental grade point average (GPA) for the spring semester. Within this accomplishment, Tarleton Athletics had 55 student-athletes – 17 percent of its entire athlete population – boast a 4.0 GPA for the semester.

In the spring, Tarleton had nine full teams enjoy team GPAs over 3.0 and five of them were 3.5 or higher. A total of 227 student-athletes – 68 percent of the athlete population – ended the semester with a 3.0 GPA or better and 141 of them were 3.5 or higher, including the 55 with a perfect 4.0 mark.

Tarleton also had four programs – softball, women’s golf, women’s tennis and women’s volleyball – record perfect semesters in the classroom with every member of their roster passing every class.
