Services for George Benson Gilbert, 92, retired Stephenville School Superintendent, will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, January 5, 2022, at the First Christian Church of Stephenville. Private burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Lipan, Texas.

Ben was born in Lipan, Texas, on June 16, 1929, to Robert Benson and Faye Belle (Sears) Gilbert. He married Anna Audean O’Bannon on June 19, 1953. She preceded him in death on June 22, 1992. 

Mr. Gilbert was a longtime resident of Stephenville, and a member of the First Christian Church. He was associated with the Stephenville School system for almost 45 years. He retired in 1995 after serving as Superintendent for 21 years. A career highlight was the naming of Gilbert Intermediate School in May of 2000. He was active in many civic organizations including the Stephenville Chamber of Commerce and the Lions Club. He always said, “Stephenville is a great place to live and raise a family.” After retirement, he split time between homes in Lipan and Stephenville. He was elected to serve on the Educational Service Center Region XI Board in Fort Worth for many years. He owned and operated land and cattle in Palo Pinto and Parker County his entire life. He was a graduate of Texas A&M University, a member of Corps, and was a U.S. Army veteran who served in the Korean War as a Second Lieutenant. 

Survivors include sons, Mike Gilbert and wife, Kae, of Aledo, Texas, and Greg Gilbert and wife, Julie, of Lipan/Santo, Texas; grandchildren, Tyler Gilbert and wife, Shelby, Grant Gilbert, and Bryson Gilbert; and great-grandchildren, Hailee Gilbert and Layne Gilbert. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Virginia Baker and Bobbie Lea Gilbert.
