STEPHENVILLE – The Tarleton baseball team stifled Incarnate Word with pitching and solid defense to gain their second win of the season by a score of 1-0 in the midweek game at the Tarleton Baseball Complex.

Tarleton (2-2) threw a combination of Kyler Mentzel, Isiah Campa and Matthew Hickey to shut out UIW (0-1). The Cardinals were held to no runs on four hits.

Campa, the transfer from New Mexico, was the star of the night in relief of Mentzel. He threw 6.0 scoreless innings, giving up one hit and striking out six in his first appearance of the season. Mentzel made his second start of the season and threw 2.0 innings allowing no runs on three hits. Hickey came in for the ninth and earned the save, fanning two. Mason Crews caught a Cardinal stealing second for the final out of the game.

UIW gave the Texans a scare in the first inning when they loaded the bases off two singles and a walk, but Mentzel forced a ground ball from Cardinal first baseman Nixon Brannan that turned into a 6-4-3 double play to get out of the inning.

The Texans had only two hits on the night and were aided by a Cardinal error to score in the fourth inning. Kemuel Thomas-Rivera reached on an error by the UIW second baseman that helped him reach second. Taylor Daniell advanced Thomas-Rivera to third with an infield groundout and Carter Dobrinski singled to the gap in right field to score the Texans lone run of the ballgame.

Up next the Texans host the Eastern Illinois Panthers at the Tarleton Baseball Complex this weekend. With inclement weather looming, the game times are not officially set.
