STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton soccer deepened its midfield depth in a major way with the addition of the 20th member of its inaugural recruiting class.
Head coach Pete Cuadrado announced the signing of University of Dayton transfer Adriana Alonso-Gomez on Wednesday.
Originally from Miranda de Ebro, Spain, Alonso-Gomez has three years to play three seasons for Tarleton.
She appeared in 24 matches in two seasons for the Flyers, helping the team to a combined record of 19-12-3.
The 5-5 midfielder averaged 24 minutes across 16 matches during the fall 2021 campaign. Alonso-Gomez was a key member of a Flyers squad that posted an overall record of 12-6-2 and 8-2 mark in Atlantic 10 play. Dayton earned the No. 2 seed in the Atlantic 10 Championship and advanced to the semifinals.
The Spainard’s offensive prowess was on full display against Power Five opposition. Alonso-Gomez netted her first collegiate goal off a penalty kick vs. Michigan State on Sept. 12. She posted a .333 shooting percentage to lead all players.
Alonso-Gomez carved out a spot in the Flyers’ rotation in her first season overseas. She played in eight matches during the spring 2021 season, earning her first collegiate start against Butler on Feb. 2, 2021. Alonso-Gomez later registered her first shot on goal in a 5-1 home victory over St. Bonaventure.
She also shined in the classroom in Ohio, as she was named to the 2020-21 Atlantic 10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll.
The credentials Alonso-Gomez earned on Spain’s club soccer circuit spawned an opportunity to compete in the United States at the sport’s highest amateur level. Alonso-Gomez played three seasons (2017-2020) for Deportivo Alavés, which is recognized as one of the most successful teams in Spain’s Basque County. Her accolades began much earlier, though. Alonso-Gomez competed five times for the Spanish Championship, two times each with Castilla y León U-12 and Castilla y León U-16 and once with Euskadi U-17.
Alonso-Gomez intends to major in kinesiology with a concentration in exercise science while at Tarleton.
The addition of Alonso-Gomez marks the third straight D1 transfer Cuadrado has added and fourth overall. Tarleton previously announced the signings of defenders Macie Witter (Georgia) and Macie Johnson (Stephen F. Austin). Alonso-Gomez will join Jenaya Brown (Laramie County Community College), who was honored as a United Soccer Coaches Junior College All-American, in the midfield this fall.
Cuadrado and assistant coach Rex Carrell signed 16 players during the Initial Signing Date of Nov. 10.
Tarleton anticipates adding more players in the coming weeks to round out its roster. The Texans begin their debut D1 season in August.
