DENVER – Following a pair of standout seasons on the hardwood, Tarleton guards Shamir Bogues and Montre Gipson are taking home All-Western Athletic Conference postseason honors.
Bogues was one of just five players named to the All-Defensive Team while Gipson earned Second Team-All-WAC recognition. Awards were voted on by conference head coaches.
“It’s always great to have deserving players honored for hard work and dedication,” head coach Billy Gillispie said. “These two young men deserve this recognition. They both have had great years on the court, in the classroom, and are great ambassadors for Tarleton State University every day of the year. They are both champions in every way and a pleasure to be around. I am thankful to have the opportunity to coach these two great young men.”
Bogues is the first player in Tarleton basketball history to be selected to the All-Defensive team. He was a thorn in the side of opposing backcourts all winter. Bogues’ 55 total steals ranked third in the WAC. He was tied for fourth among his conference peers in steals per game (1.8). Bogues also swatted away 18 shots to rank second on Tarleton in blocks.
He posted 14 multi-steal games – eight of which came in conference play- and recorded three-or-more steals 10 times.
Bouges’ seven steals at South Alabama were an individual game-high in the WAC and the fourth-most in a single game in school history. He also tallied four steals to pair with a team-high 20 points in Tarleton’s trip to Allen Fieldhouse on Nov. 12 vs. No. 3 Kansas. Bogues netted three steals in triumphs over Southwestern Assemblies of God and Air Force on Dec. 7 and Dec. 21, respectively.
Four of his multi-steal efforts in conference play correlated with Texan victories. Bogues poked the ball free three times in a win over Lamar on Feb. 26 in Tarleton’s home finale and swiped the ball away twice in Tarleton’s victories over Sam Houston (Jan. 6), UTRGV (Jan. 29) and Chicago State, (Feb. 5). He also registered multiple steals against Utah Valley in each of the teams’ two meetings and finished with three steals opposite WAC regular season co-champion Seattle U and Grand Canyon.
For his career, Bogues has recorded at least three steals in 18-of-50 games played and is Tarleton’s active leader in career steals with 92.
Gipson’s accolade marks the second straight year he has received postseason all-conference recognition. The DeSoto, Texas, native was named to the All-WAC Newcomer Team and garnered Honorable Mention All-WAC credentials in 2020-21.
He made 30 starts for Tarleton, averaging 14.9 points and 3.2 assists across 35.5 minutes per game to lead Tarleton in all three categories. Gipson, 5-11, also snagged a team-high 53 offensive rebounds and ranked third on the team in rebounds per game (4.7).
Gipson cemented himself as the most decorated player in Tarleton’s Division I era in his second season in Purple and White. He made history on Jan. 1 when he became the first D1 player to score 500 career points. Gipson is Tarleton’s active leader in career minutes played (1,723), points scored (752), field goals made (274), free throws made (171) and assists (155).
He ranked in the top-10 in the WAC in five major statistical categories. Gipson led the conference in total minutes (1,100), knocked down 87-110 attempts at the foul line to rank eighth in free throw percentage (.791), was ninth in scoring and ranked 10th in both assists per game and steals per game (1.3).
Gipson was Tarleton’s most consistent offensive playmaker over the duration of the 2021-22 campaign. Gipson scored in double figures in 26-of-31 games and eclipsed 20 points on six occasions.
Some of Gipson’s most memorable offensive efforts came against the cream of the crop.
He netted 19 points and six rebounds on Nov. 12 at No. 3 Kansas and followed up the performance by scoring a game-high 17 points at No. 20 Michigan on Nov. 24 to help Tarleton nearly pull off an upset of the Wolverines. Gipson’s 29 points scored in a home victory over Southwestern Assemblies of God on Dec. 8 were tied for the most in a single game by a Tarleton player this season. He closed out nonconference play with a 27-point, seven-rebound and three-assist effort in a 65-52 win over South Alabama on Dec. 17.
Against WAC opponents, Gipson led Tarleton in scoring on six occasions and dished out a team-high 3.8 assists per game. He tallied 23 points apiece vs. WAC regular season co-champions New Mexico State and Seattle U. Gipson averaged 18 points and six assists per game in a memorable home sweep of Sam Houston and Stephen F. Austin on Jan. 6-8 and led all players with 22 points in Tarleton’s penultimate home game of the season –a 75-62 win over UTRGV on Feb. 24. He snagged a career-best nine rebounds as a part of a 79-60 win at Chicago State on Feb. 19.
