HUNTSVILLE – On a cold and windy night, the Sam Houston bats were firing more than Tarleton’s as they took down the Texans 12-4 at Don Sanders Stadium on Friday night, in what was the first Western Athletic Conference game of the season for either team.
After the Bearkats (8-5, 1-0 WAC) got three runs across in the first inning, Tarleton (3-10, 0-1 WAC) responded with a two-spot in the second. London Green led things off with a solo home run to right field and Karson Krowka hit an RBI groundout to second to make it a 3-2 ballgame.
The Texans would take the lead in the top of the third inning. London Green singled to right field to score Alec Williams and Green eventually came around to score, aided by a throwing error from the Sam Houston third baseman. The 4-3 lead was the only one Tarleton saw as Sam Houston pushed four more runs across in the bottom half and did not look back scoring five more throughout the rest of the game.
Tarleton starting pitcher Luke Baley suffered the loss to move to 0-1 after surrendering nine runs (six earned) on six hits in 3.2 innings of work with only one strikeout. The Texans sent three more arms out in Beau Ross, Zach Poe and Landon Cody but only finished with a combined three strikeouts in the game.
Green and Williams each finished with two hits for Tarleton, with Green having two RBI. Sam Houston was led by Carlos Contreras at the plate as he ended the night with four hits and two RBI.
Cole Wesneski earned the spot start for the home team and did not disappoint. He went 7.0 innings allowing four runs on six hits, striking out 10 Texans.
