HUNTSVILLE – Tarleton is on a mission, and no one can stop them, especially not Lamar.

The Texans beat the Cardinals 4-3 on Saturday in Huntsville, Texas, in a neutral site match on campus of Sam Houston. Tarleton improved to 12-4 with the win and 4-0 against Western Athletic Conference teams this season, although this was technically their first conference match of the year. Lamar dropped to 7-7, 0-1 in WAC play.

Tarleton maintained their claim to be the best team in the conference despite being picked third in the Southwest Division with Saturday’s win, their 11th W in their last 13 matches.

To start, the Texans won the doubles point with a dominant 6-1 win in the No. 1 flight by Deniza Marcinkevica and Martha Makantasi over Elena Tairyan and Alba Perez. In the No. 2 match, Jemi Aguilar and Elsa Boisson defeated Noelia Lorca and Elena Rubio 6-4. The No. 3 match between Celia Vaudiau-Faustine Palatte and Jayci Wong-Ana Jolic went unfinished at 4-4.

In singles, the Texans went up 2-0 with Makantasi’s blowout of Lorca 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 3 position. The Tarleton sophomore improved to 12-3 on the season in singles, 9-3 at No. 3, with five straight overall wins.

The Cardinals got on the board with the next point at the No. 2 position, with Jolic beating Aguilar 6-3, 6-1.

The No. 5 flight was virtually decided before it even started, as no one can compete with Vaudiau in singles. The Texan junior won her 14th straight singles match, her 11th consecutive win in straight sets, with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Rubio. Vaudiau is 14-1 on the year.

The Cardinals got back in the match with two singles wins at the Nos. 4 and 6 positions, with Perez beating Boisson 6-2, 6-3 and Emmeline Polevoi defeating Anna Davidson 6-3, 6-4.

With the match tied 3-3, it was up to the top flight in singles to decide which team would win. Marcinkevica got it done for the purple and white, defeating Tairyan 7-5, 5-7, 6-1. Marcinkevica improved to 7-5 on the year, all at the No. 1 position.

The Texans will be back at it Sunday in the same location, taking on Stephen F. Austin at 2 p.m. CT. The Ladyjacks were voted the No. 1 team in the Southwest Division in the WAC Pre-Conference Coaches Poll. They are 8-5 on the year.
