STEPHENVILLE – The Western Athletic Conference announced on Wednesday that for the second straight week, the Tarleton duo of Deniza Marcinkevica and Martha Makantasi is the TicketSmarter WAC Doubles Team of the Week.
This is the sixth time in 10 weeks this season that the Tarleton tennis team has received at least one of the two conference weekly awards.
Marcinkevica and Makantasi earn the award from matches played March 14-20, going 2-0 as a pair in the top flight of doubles. On Saturday against Lamar in a neutral site match on campus of Sam Houston, the Texan duo defeated Elena Tairyan and Alba Perez 6-1. The following day at the same location, Marcinkevica and Makantasi beat Stephen F. Austin’s Ai Noa Fabre and Zala Ule by the same score, 6-1.
Tarleton won the doubles point in all three of their matches this past week, with Marcinkevica’s and Makantasi’s doubles match against Pacific on Tuesday going unfinished due to the point having been clinched.
Marcinkevica and Makantasi are now 4-0 together, becoming Tarleton’s top pair on March 5. Individually in doubles, Marcinkevica is 11-2, all at the No. 1 position. Makantasi is 12-4, 4-0 at No. 1 and 7-3 at No. 3.
The Texans went 2-1 on the week, winning their first two conference matches played against Lamar and SFA, who was picked to win the Southwest Division of the WAC by the coaches in the pre-conference poll. The Texans are 13-4 on the year, winners of 12 of their past 14 matches. They’re 5-0 against WAC teams, although just two are considered conference matches.
This was the 10th week the WAC has dished out weekly awards this tennis season. Six times out of the 10 weeks, Tarleton has earned at least one of the two awards distributed, winning both awards three times.
This is the fourth time Marcinkevica has been on a WAC Doubles Team of the Week this season, and her fifth WAC weekly award of the year total. Makantasi has now won four WAC weekly awards, three times named to the Doubles Team of the Week.
