STEPHENVILLE – Through every match, Tarleton seemingly has been setting recent history program records for “best start to a season.” After another dominating performance Friday, Tarleton doesn’t have to settle on “best start,” but simply “best season.”
The Texans rolled the UTEP Miners 6-1 at home on Friday at the Potishman-Lard Tennis Courts in Stephenville to improve to 14-4 on the year. Tarleton has now set their most wins in a season over the past 15 years, last winning 14+ matches in 2006-07 (15-6). Clearly, this version of the Texans is considered a more successful bunch, holding a 12-4 record against NCAA Division I opponents, including a 5-0 spot against Western Athletic Conference teams.
And oh yeah, Tarleton still has four matches left to play.
Tarleton snapped UTEP’s three-match winning streak, dropping them to 5-9 on the year. The Texans got off to a good start once again, winning their sixth straight doubles point since head coach Elianne Douglas-Miron altered the pairings on March 5.
Deniza Marcinkevica and Martha Makantasi remained undefeated together at the No. 1 flight, now 5-0, with their 6-4 win over Veronika Lebisova and Thassane Abrahim. At No. 3, Celia Vaudiau and Faustine Palatte clinched the point with their 6-3 win over Kathleen Percegona and Elena Dibattista. The Texan duo is now 6-3 with three straight wins. The No. 2 match played out, with UTEP’s Carlotta Mencaglia and Eve Daniels getting the better of Tarleton’s Elsa Boisson and Jemi Aguilar 7-6.
On to singles, Marcinkevica took the first match of the day with a 6-3, 6-4 win at the No. 1 position over Percegona. Marcinkevica is 9-5 this season, all at No. 1, with three straight wins.
Next up was Makantasi winning 6-4, 7-5 over Lina Sachica at No. 3 to improve to 13-4 on the year. Aguilar fell next at the No. 2 spot 1-6, 6-7 to Mencaglia.
The match was then clinched almost simultaneously, with Boisson and Vaudiau just seconds away from each other winning on their respective courts. Boisson gets credit for the match clincher with her 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 win over Dibattista at No. 4. Boisson is now 12-5 in singles. Vaudiau then defeated Lebisova 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 at No. 5 for her 16th straight singles victory, boasting a 16-1 record.
Anna Davidson capped off the day for the purple and white, beating Abrahim 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 at the No. 6 position. Davidson is now 4-2 this year with two straight wins.
Tarleton is back at it the next day, hosting New Mexico State on Saturday at 2 p.m. CT at the Potishman-Lard Tennis Courts.
