BEAUMONT – Have a day, Mathilde Brogens.

The Tarleton freshman had two of her best career rounds on Monday at the Cardinal Classic to put her in first place by five strokes heading into the final round Tuesday. In the first round at the Beaumont Country Club, Brogens shot a career-best -1 (71), besting her even score of 72 at the Lady Red Wolves Classic in the fall.

Her 71 is the lowest score by a Tarleton player this season. She already has the best finish by a Texan this year, placing tied-third at the UTRGV Invitational.

Brogens followed up her 71 with a +2 (74) in Round 2, putting her at +1 on the tournament. The next closest opponent on the leaderboard is Lamar’s Alessia Trebbi-Tindall at +6 on her home course.

The Tarleton freshman had a back-and-forth first round, seemingly trading birdies and bogeys throughout. She had six birdies through the first 18 holes, countered by five bogeys, adding seven pars. Brogens birdied each of her last two holes to put together Tarleton’s first under-par score of the year. She then birdied her first hole of the second round for a three-birdie stretch. She ended her day with another birdie to get to +1 on the tournament.

Tarleton is second in the field of four with a +51 score, four strokes behind Lamar at +47.

Sofia Rodriguez had the best start to the Cardinal Classic with two birdies through her first two holes, three birdies over her first four. She shot +5 (77) in Round 1. In the second round, two brutal holes ruined her chance at a great day, quadruple bogeys coming on holes 13 and 6. Still, she sits in fifth place heading into the final round with a total score of +15 (77-82).

Six of the seven-woman Tarleton roster are participating in this tournament. Alejandra Cambronero is +17 (78-83), tied for seventh. Bridgett Joeris is ninth at +18 (81-81), Angela Inocian is 11th at +20 (81-83), and Marianella Moreschi is 17th at +29 (87-86). This is Moreschi’s first tournament of the year.

The third and final round will begin at 8:30 a.m. CT Tuesday with a shotgun start.
