BEAUMONT – It was a tough finish on Tuesday for the purple and white, but it was still a terrific performance by Mathilde Brogens at the Cardinal Challenge to finish in second place.
Brogens shot +8 across three rounds Monday-Tuesday at the Beaumont Country Club, short of the winner by a single stroke. The Texans also took second place at +82, behind only the host team, Lamar.
Brogens’ second-place performance is the best outing by a Texan this season, surpassing her tied-third finish in the Lady Red Wolves Classic in the fall. Her +8 (224) score marked her second-best tournament of the year, three strokes behind her outing in Arkansas in October.
The freshman led the Cardinal Challenge after each of the first two rounds, heading into the final day up five strokes. She had two of her best career rounds on Monday, turning in a career-best -1 (71) in Round 1, carding +2 in Round 2. Brogens and Lamar’s Alessia Trebbi-Tindall were paired together as the tournament’s top two players on Tuesday. Brogens bogeyed each of her final four holes to shoot +7 (79) on the day, as Trebbi-Tindall shot +1 in Round 3 to go +7 overall and win by a stroke.
Brogens had nine birdies across the 54 holes, second most in the field, six of which came in Round 1. She had the best overall score on Par 5s at -2, averaging a gross score of 4.83.
This was Tarleton’s best place finish of the season, and their best team score since the Colonel Wollenberg Ptarmigan Ram Classic in October.
Six Texans participated at the Beaumont Country Club, a Par 72, 6,094-yard course. Angela Inocian technically played as an individual.
Sofia Rodriguez turned in back-to-back top-20 finishes with a sixth spot on the leaderboard this week, shooting +22 (77-82-79). She had the best start to the Cardinal Classic with two birdies through her first two holes, three birdies over her first four. In the second round, two brutal holes ruined her chance at a great day, quadruple bogeys coming on holes 13 and 6. Her sixth-place finish was her best of the season, her second top-10 performance.
Bridgett Joeris had her best tournament of the spring at +25 (81-81-79), placing tied-eighth. She ended strong, going -2 over her final six holes. Joeris, a freshman, had the best score on Par 3s in the tournament, going -1 with an average gross score of 2.92. This was the first time she’s placed in the top-10 this season.
Alejandra Cambronero shot +27 (78-83-82) to take 10th, her first time in the top-10 this year. Inocian shot +36 (81-83-88) to take tied-12th, while Marianella Moreschi carded +40 (87-86-83) to finish 15th. This was Moreschi’s first tournament of the year.
The Cardinal Challenge was the last regular season tournament for the Texans in 2021-22. All that awaits the team now is the WAC Championship at the Riverhill Country Club in Kerrville on April 18-20.
