One man sits in the Erath County Jail while his father is in critical condition after a shooting in Erath County Saturday night.

According to law enforcement officials, a call came into 911 at approximately 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 9, reporting Kent Reeves, who is an Erath County auditor, was shot several times with an AR-15. First responders arrived on scene and Kent was taken to a Fort Worth hospital where he underwent emergency surgery and is now in ICU.

First responders reported the alleged shooter, 22-year-old Garrett Reeves, the victim’s son, had already fled with his girlfriend by the time they arrived. However, Erath County law enforcement was able to locate and arrest Garrett Reeves Sunday, April 10, and he is in the Erath County Jail charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Bond has not been set, and it is not yet clear why the shooting occurred.

Because Reeves is a county employee, the Erath County Sheriff’s Office cannot lead the investigation and the case will be investigated by the Texas Rangers.
