SPECIAL TO THE FLASH

After 66 years, Zonta Club of Stephenville will terminate its membership with Zonta International. For over six decades, the local chapter has successfully carried out the mission of Zonta International—advancing the status of women worldwide.

The focus of the local chapter has been to sponsor fundraisers to support educational and community services. Zonta Stephenville has been able to fund two Tarleton State University scholarships. These scholarships are fully endowed in memory of two Zonta Stephenville members—the Loy Patton Nursing Scholarship and the Juanita Dixon Single Parent Scholarship. Additionally this year, nine $1,000 scholarships were awarded to Erath County high school graduating female students.

The Zonta Club of Stephenville is well known for two popular fundraisers. The Zonta Arts and Crafts Fair has been held during the opening deer season weekend for the last 56 years at the Stephenville Rec Hall. It provided an opportunity for ladies of the community to do some holiday shopping while their husbands were off hunting. A concession stand favorite was borne from this event—the Zonta Burger—a different twist on the traditional Sloppy Joe burger. Another popular event is the Zonta Penny Auction held the second Saturday in March. The first Penny Auction was held in 1998 and has grown in popularity.

Although Zonta Club of Stephenville will be disbanding, many of its members will join forces with the Cross Timbers Business and Professional Women’s Club to continue serving our community. B&PW members have expressed interest in hosting the Penny Auction and the Run with Rudolph 5K fun run held the first Saturday in December.

Stephenville Zonta President Jamie Jones had these thoughts:  “Throughout the years, long before I was involved, Zonta has been a major contributor to our community. Organizations such as Meals on Wheels and Backpack Buddies, plus many others have been touched by Zonta volunteers. It has been a pleasure serving alongside the amazing women of Zonta. Not only have I learned so much about volunteerism, professionalism & community – I have gained great friendships.”
