Bruce Elton Slaughter of Hico, Texas, passed away on February 17, 2023 at the age of 87.
Bruce was born on February 19, 1935 in Hico, Texas where he grew up. After graduating college from Tarleton State University and from the University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy, he returned to Hico where he worked for 50 years as a pharmacist. He married, raised a family, enjoyed friendships, and served the community of Hico for all of his life.
Bruce married Margaret Parks, the love of his life, on September 21, 1963. They enjoyed 58 beautiful years together, raising three children, and were separated only by her death in November of 2019.
He spent his later years traveling 47 of the 50 states with Margaret and spending precious time with his family. Bruce was a devoted father and entirely beloved by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Bruce lived his life with a selfless heart and dedicated many hours to supporting and helping the community and its members. He was a member of the Hico Church of Christ and served as a member and officer of the Hico ISD School Board, the Hico Civic Club, and the Hico Cemetery Association. He volunteered countless hours in the community and to individuals throughout his lifetime. He was known for his kindness, selflessness, and gentleness to all. In 2020 he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the city, in recognition of his years of dedication to the citizens of Hico. He helped make Hico a wonderful place to live, work, and love. His community and family revered him greatly.
Bruce was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Margaret Parks Slaughter; by his father and mother, Elton and Lucille Slaughter; sister and brother-in-law, Wyvonne and Calvin Rightmer; nephew, Dan Rightmer; father and mother-in-law, Steve and Verma Parks; brother-in-law, Ray Parks and his wife June; brother-in-law, S.D. Parks; niece, Teresa Knippers; and nephew, Rick Parks.
Bruce is survived by his daughter Kelli Montgomery of Fort Worth, son Erik Slaughter and wife Shawna of Argyle, and son Cole and wife Carla of Granbury. He is also survived by his beloved seven grandchildren: Seth, Dylan (wife Kourtnye), Kelci, Macaul (husband Jessy), Mason, Bailey, and Paige. He is also survived by three great-grandchildren: Witten, Haiden, and Parker. Three nieces, Jan Boulineau, Tjuna Douglass, Martha Jackson, and one nephew, Stephen Parks, also survive him. Bruce is also survived by many friends.
Bruce was adored and treasured by his family and all who knew him. He gave the world a remarkable legacy of values, memories, friendship, love, and respect. He will be missed tremendously.
The family would like to thank Bruce’s friends, the Hico Activity Center, Hico Nursing and Rehabilitation, and Baylor Scott and White Hillcrest Hospital and Hospice for the love, care, and friendship provided to him.
Visitation is Friday, February 24, from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm at Harvest Hills Funeral Home in Hico.
Celebration of life will be held on February 25 at 10:00 am at the Hico Church of Christ, with interment following at Hico Cemetery.
The family suggests donations as expressions of sympathy be made to the Hico Activity Center.
