STEPHENVILLE – Five Texans will compete in their respective country’s national championships for the potential of earning a bid to the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, Japan this weekend.

Victoria Cameron and Sir Jonathan Sims will compete at the US National Championships from July 31-August 3 in Eugene, Ore. Lauren Roy will compete at the Irish National Championships in Dublin, Ireland from August 2-3. Finally, Prestina Ochonogor will compete in the Nigerian National Championships from July 31-August 3. Amandine Estival will be running at the French National Championships on August 2-3. The US competition will be streamed on USATF.TV. Tarleton State’s pair of athletes are joined by Southern Utah Ajia Hughes as the only three WAC student-athletes to be participating in this year’s US National Championships.

“The USA Championships are finally here and it is exciting to have two of our athletes here in this competition,” said head coach Bobby Carter who is in Oregon to coach his athletes. “For the field events they only take the top 16 in the country, that have signed up for the meet and also have the standard. This is also the same for the running events as well but they take top 33. Again, for Tarleton State to have two athletes here and two more in their country’s national championships is impressive and I’m very proud of all of our athletes and what they have accomplished this season. They are here to try and make the World Championship team! I truly believe anything is possible. This is a testament that Tarleton State Track and Field can compete with anyone in the country and we will!”

Victoria Cameron’s sensational season continues on one of the biggest stages, next to one of the biggest stars in women’s track and field. Cameron will be competing in the prelims of the 100 meters at the USATF US National Championships in the lane next to 2023 US and World 100-meter champion, Sha’Carri Richardson. Cameron will be racing in lane 7 in heat 1 of the preliminaries on Thursday evening at 6:07 pm CT / 4:07 pm PT. The top six finishers in each of the four heats and then the next best three time will advance to the 27-women semifinals on Friday at 6:47 pm CT / 4:47 pm PT. As a high schooler, Cameron was just .07 seconds away from breaking Richardson’s Texas 4A State 100-meter record. Also in the field of 29 women is 2024 Paris bronze medalist, Melissa Jefferson and fifth place finisher, Twinisha Terry. A 2023 World Championship finalist Tamari Davis is also in the stacked field.

Sir Jonathan Sims will be competing in both the long jump and triple jump this weekend. He will compete in the field of 17 athletes in the long jump on Friday at 6:10 pm CT / 4:10 PT. He will then have a day off and compete in the triple jump competition on Sunday at 2:30 pm CT / 12:30 pm PT. Sims represented Team USA at the World University Games in Germany last week and will look to claim a spot on Team USA for the World Championships with a top performance at the trials. He will need to jump at least 8.27 meters in the long jump or 17.22 meters in the triple jump and earn a top spot in the competition to earn the right to represent USA. Paris Olympian and sixth place triple jumper Salif Mane is also in the field as well as the 2025 NCAA National Champion, Brandon Green of Oklahoma.

Lauren Roy will be competing at the Irish National Championships on August 2-3 at Morton Stadium in Dublin, Ireland. Roy will be competing in both the women’s 100 and 200. Roy was selected to Team Ireland’s 4×100 meter relay for the 2022 World Championships in Eugene, Ore. Roy helped the quartet finish eighth in 44.48 seconds. This time around she will look to not only earn a spot on the relay team, but also in the open 100 and 200. She will compete in the 100 prelims and finals on Saturday and the 200 prelims and finals on Sunday.

Prestina Ochonogor will be in search of earning a spot to represent Nigeria in Tokyo this weekend as well. The youngster who competed in the 2024 Paris Olympics for Nigeria will look to claim another top spot at the national trials this weekend. Ochonogor will compete in the long jump this weekend at the Yabatech Sports Complex in Yagos, Nigeria.

Amandine Estival will be competing at the French National Championships this weekend as well. She will be competing in the 100 and the 200 on Saturday and Sunday. The French National Championships are held at the Stade Pierre Paul Bernard in Talence, France.

These four competing in their national championships will be joined by Lokesh Sathyanathan also competing at the Indian National Championships later this month. The group of five will be competing for spots to represent their country at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, Japan in September.
