Luther Gaylon Bullard, known to everyone as Gaylon, passed away peacefully in his sleep at the Hico Nursing Home on August 19, 2025. He would have turned 91 this coming September 11. Born on September 11, 1934, in Hico, Texas, Gaylon lived a long life marked by resilience, dedication and a deep love for his family.

Gaylon was the fourth of eight children born to Asa and Levada Bullard and was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was also preceded in death by his beloved wife of 50 years, Delyghte Bullard, and their daughter, Gay Lynn Bullard.

He is survived by his daughters: Lisa Anne Bullard of Hico, and Jessie Uptergrove and her husband Wade, also of Hico. Gaylon was a proud grandfather to Justin Uptergrove, Ashley Stone and husband Shawn, and Sara Roberts and husband Chris. His legacy continues through his seven great-grandchildren: Hayden Uptergrove, Jaxon Stone, Pason Stone, Zoey Stone, Tillson Stone, Ella Roberts and Emmalyn Roberts. Finally, he is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

From a young age, Gaylon’s determination was evident. At just eight years old, he suffered a lifechanging accident while chopping wood with his brother, losing the fingers on his right hand. Though doctors and others doubted his future, Gaylon never let that define him. He re-learned how to write, eat and live independently. He worked tirelessly to match the strength and effort of his brothers in the cotton fields and eventually earning his high school diploma. It was immediately after graduation when he met the love of his life, Delyghte Britt from Granbury.

After graduation Gaylon wanted to enlist in the military, but he wasn’t able to due to his deformed hand. Instead, Gaylon set his sights westward, heading to the oil fields of West Texas. Through grit, determination and perseverance, he found himself in the right place at the right time and became a partner-and later, sole owner- of a well servicing business. Delyghte worked side by side with him making their nest egg so that they could retire back home to Hico in 1972. There he finished raising his 3 daughters, 3 grandchildren and witnessed the beginning of the next generation, his 7 great grandchildren.

Visitation 1-2pm, Thursday, August 21, 2025 followed by services at 2pm at Harvest Hills Funeral Home with burial to follow at Hico Cemetery.
