STEPHENVILLE — Tarleton State’s basketball court inside the new EECU Center will now wear the name of proud university supporters, Scott and Lenna Summy. The Summys were recognized on Saturday, Oct. 18 for their $2 million gift as their generosity continues to shape the future of the institution.
The Summys’ gift honors their love of basketball and commitment to providing opportunities for Tarleton State students. The couple previously established a pre-law scholarship in 2018 and have now extended their impact through this transformational athletics contribution.
“We are deeply thankful to Scott and Lenna Summy for their vision and generosity,” said Tarleton State President Dr. James Hurley. “Naming Summy Court will forever embed their legacy at our university and elevate the experience of our student-athletes. Seeing the Summy name on the court will showcase Scott and Lenna’s dedication and commitment to the future success of every Tarleton State Texan for years to come.”
“Summy Court at the EECU Center is one of the very best facilities in all of college athletics,” said Steve Uryasz, Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics. “Our student-athletes, coaches and support staff are blessed to have the support of outstanding Texans like Scott and Lenna Summy. Their generosity creates a transformational impact for our university for years to come and it’s an honor to have their name represented in this best-in-class facility.”
A first-generation college student and 1986 alumnus, Scott Summy credits scholarships with making his education possible, a gratitude that inspired the couple’s philanthropy. Today, he leads the Environmental Litigation Group at Dallas-based Baron & Budd and remains deeply connected to Tarleton State’s growth.
“Tarleton State gave me a chance when I couldn’t afford college,” Scott said. “Scholarships were my way through school, and we wanted to pay that forward. Our family loves basketball, so supporting the athletic program in this way means a lot to us.”
Scott was named a Tarleton State Alumni Association Distinguished Alumni at the 2025 university gala.
Inspired by Tarleton State’s continued momentum under President Hurley’s leadership and the university’s move to NCAA Division I athletics, the Summys chose to invest in future generations of Texans and the student-athlete experience.
The EECU Center will seat up to 8,000 fans for basketball games. The two-story multipurpose arena will host NCAA Division I competition, conferences, concerts, conventions and community events, serving as a new hub for the university and the region.
