I remember going to school with Dylan. I was in band, so I often arrived early, and I’d frequently see his teacher warmly greeting him as he stepped off the bus. I also remember the colorful bandanas he wore around his neck—each one different, each one vibrant. As a kid, I thought he looked like a fun cowboy, and all he needed was a pair of boots and a hat to complete the look.
If this is the same Dylan I’m thinking of, I believe he was a life skills student at our high school. It’s truly heartbreaking to lose someone my age—especially a peer. My deepest condolences go out to Dylan’s family. He was such a bright light in the brief time I knew him, and I can only imagine the depth of their grief.
From what I saw, Dylan was a bright young man. Like all of us, he had his moments, but I always admired his cheerful smile on the good days. As someone who has a loved one with special needs, I understand how challenging it can be. You want the best for them in a world that doesn’t always understand, and it takes immense effort to help them find independence. But no matter how difficult the journey is, you do it out of love and hope for their future. And in the end, it’s worth it—just to see them grow, improve, or simply smile.
Though I never got to know Dylan deeply, I always admired his ability to persevere and light up a room. Dylan Ary may have passed on, but he will never be forgotten. He’ll always hold a small place in my heart as I continue my journey as a pre-service educator working with students like him.
