Darrell Brown, a devoted servant leader, loving husband, father, brother, uncle, and “bonus” grandfather, passed away leaving behind a life richly filled with faith, family, friendship, and service to his community.
Darrell was born in Los Angeles, California, on July 29, 1965, to Joe Brown and Ida Mae McGee Griggs. He married Angela Poen on February 6, 1993, in Stephenville, Texas.
Darrell fulfilled his lifelong dream of becoming a police officer in 1988, beginning his professional career with the Tarleton State University Police Department as a certified peace officer. His dedication and leadership soon led to his promotion to sergeant before he transitioned to a broader calling in community and professional service. Over the years, Darrell continued to make a meaningful impact through his leadership with STAR Council, followed by seventeen years with Town & Country Bank in Stephenville, where he served as Vice President of Business Development. His passion for higher education and student engagement drew him back to Tarleton State University, where he spent eleven years in various leadership roles within Student Affairs. Most recently, Darrell served as the Director of Administrative Services for the City of Stephenville, where his vision, professionalism, and heart for people continued to thrive.
Public service was truly the heart of Darrell Brown. Beyond his professional career, he faithfully served multiple church homes—Solomon Temple Baptist in Stamford, Texas, St. John Baptist and First Baptist in Stephenville, and Calvary Baptist in Stephenville. As an ordained deacon and Worship Leader, Darrell found joy and purpose in singing about his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. His faith was steadfast, and his ministry touched countless lives.
Darrell’s service extended beyond church and work into countless community organizations. He was an active and proud member of Rotary International, actively serving as the President, and the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity, cherishing the bond of brotherhood that it brought throughout his life. He gave generously of his time and leadership to numerous boards and committees, including the Independent Bankers Association of Texas, the Stephenville Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors, Tarleton Alumni Association Board, Stephenville City Council, Erath County United Way, and the Mt. Olive Cemetery Board. Darrell had a unique gift for bringing people together, planning memorable community events such as the MLK Breakfasts at Tarleton and with the City of Stephenville, the Western Swing Festival, the Heavenly Highway Hymn Sings, and he was eagerly preparing for the National Southern Gospel Convention set for this spring in Stephenville.
Darrell’s lifetime of honors, awards, and recognition stands as a testament to his character and service, yet his greatest reward was his personal relationship with Jesus Christ and the joy he found in serving others.
Above all, Darrell loved his family deeply—they were the center of his world. He is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 33 years, Angie Brown of Stephenville; his son, Preston Brown and wife, Shayla, of Decatur, Texas; his daughter, Sydney Brown Kilcrease and husband, Dr. Dakota Kilcrease, of Madison, Mississippi; granddaughters, Sloan and Seeley Anderson of Decatur, Texas; parents-in-law, George and Christine Poen of Stephenville, Texas; his sister, Dr. Jackqueline Cooper and husband, Julius R. Hubbard, of San Antonio, Texas; sister-in-law, Dena Davis and husband, Clint, of Comanche, Texas; brother-in-law, Jon Poen and wife, Lindi, of Clyde, Texas; nephew “sons” Justin Jacobs and family of San Antonio, Texas, and Joshua Croker and family of San Antonio, Texas; and several other dear nieces and nephews and honorary family members. He was preceded in death by his mother, Ida Mae McGee Griggs, and grandmother, Ida Mae “Motherdear” Giddings.
He leaves behind a legacy of faith, love, and devotion that will continue to inspire all who knew him.
Services for Darrell Wayne Brown will be held at 10:00 am, Thursday, January 15, 2026, at the First Baptist Church Stephenville with Rev. Dean Bradley officiating and assisted by Rev. Russ Bare. The service will be live streamed at https://www.fbcstephenville.org/watch/watch-live-on-sundays or Facebook Live First Baptist Church Stephenville. Burial will follow at Stephenville West End Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 pm, Wednesday, January 14, 2026, at Calvary Baptist Church.
