He graduated from Carlton High School in 1962. After high school, Russell proudly served in the United States Navy. He spent several years living in Beaumont, Texas, before returning to Carlton, where he spent most of his adult life. Later, he moved to Stephenville.
He graduated from the University of Texas, laying the foundation for a lifelong career in technology. Russell worked as a computer programmer and systems analyst, contributing his expertise to the growth and development of information systems.
In 1964, Russell married Linda Lou Bates. Together they built a life and family, welcoming a son, Keith Russell Bowden, and later adopting a daughter, Brenda Bowden.
Russell was deeply involved in his community. He served on the boards of both the Carlton Cemetery Association and the Carlton Volunteer Fire Department. He was a supporter of the arts at Tarleton State University and a member of the Ultra Club. At the First Presbyterian Church of Stephenville, he served as an elder and treasurer and shared his love of music as a member of the church choir.
Throughout his life, Russell was known for his sharp mind, steady character, and quiet dedication to his work, faith, and family. He was an avid reader, a proud member of Mensa, and someone who delighted in challenging his intellect with logic, word, and brain-teasing puzzles that exercised his mind as much as his love of learning enriched his life.
