ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Texans started slow and never recovered in Sunday morning’s tournament finale against UTEP, falling 16-3 in five innings.
The Texans (14-7) finished 3-2 at the UNM Invitational in Albuquerque, New Mexico, with wins over UTEP, New Mexico and Houston Christian, suffering back-to-back losses to close against the Lobos and Miners. UTEP (8-9) outhit Tarleton State 16-5 on Sunday after falling in Saturday’s matchup 7-2.
Tarleton State allowed eight runs in the second inning on Sunday to trail 9-0. The Miners hit three home runs in the frame, including a grand slam.
Casey Schultz got one back in the fourth on a solo home run, her third of the year, but the Miners poured seven more on in the fourth to take a 16-1 lead. Braylin Pannill hit a two-run home run in the fifth, her second on the season, to make it a 16-3 final.
Tarleton State’s Jaelynn Duke (1-2) got the start and took the loss, allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits with a strikeout in one inning. Shelby Schultz allowed five runs (one earned) on five hits with a strikeout in 0.2 IP. Sadie Beck allowed six runs (five earned) on five hits and two walks in 1.2 IP. Taylor McKean allowed two earned runs on three hits in 0.2 IP.
UTEP’s Tatyana Vega (7-3) earned the win in her start, allowing two earned runs on three hits and two walks in 4.1 IP.
Pannill, Casey Schultz, Mikayla Wilson, Riley McDaniel, and Addison Wittram scattered the five hits for the Texans, with Pannill earning two RBI and Casey Schultz one.
Tarleton State will play its next road tournament this upcoming weekend in San Marcos, Texas, facing off against Texas A&M, Texas State and Saint Francis. On Friday, the Texans will take on the Aggies at 11 a.m. CT and then the Bobcats at 3:30 p.m.
