STEPHENVILLE — Tarleton State Women’s Track and Field ranked in the USTFCCCA’s national top 25 for the first time in program history entering the rankings at number 22.
The Texans are the first current WAC women’s indoor program to crack the top 25 since joining the WAC in 2020. Tarleton State’s highest ranking before reaching the top 25 was 29th earlier this season. The Texans are the highest ranked non-Power Four conference program in this week’s polls and only joined by South Dakota in the top 25, who comes in at 25th.
“This team has earned the No. 22 ranking in the nation, but we’re not here to celebrate rankings—we’re here to finish the job,” said head coach Bobby Carter. “Our standard is simple: compete with purpose, attack every moment, and leave no doubt when it’s time to perform. The mission isn’t recognition—the mission is championships.”
Tarleton State has three athletes in four events ranked in the top 16 that count towards the team rankings. Victoria Cameron has the top performance in the NCAA this season in the 60 meters clocking in at 7.08 seconds. Prestina Ochonogor is second in the nation in the long jump with her best leap of the year coming at 6.69 meters. Lauren Roy is ranked 14th in the 60 meters and 16th in the 200 meters.
The Texans have four event groups in the top 20 in the NCAA. The Texans are fourth in the nation in the women’s 60 meters, with three athletes ranking in the top 50. In the 200 meters, the Texans are ranked 16th with an average jump of 6.08 meters from their top four jumpers. The triple jump group is ranked 18th led by Sofia DeGroot’s season best of 12.51 meters. Finally, the 200-meter squad is ranked 19th in the nation with an average time of 23.65 seconds.
The Texan women are the only WAC program to send any athletes to next week’s National Championships with three competing across four events. Cameron will compete in the 60 for the second consecutive year as well as Ochonogor is competing for the second time in the long jump. The sophomore was a First Team All-American a year ago. Roy rounds out the participants as one of four women competing in the 60 and 200 meter double in Fayetteville.
