BELTON – In contrast to Tarleton State’s last matches at home with the sun shining and perfect temperatures, the rain in Belton, Texas, on Friday-Saturday provided difficulties for the UMHBeach Spring Break Bash.
The Texans were scheduled to play four matches, only getting three in with three delays in the third, going 1-2 on the weekend. Tarleton State (3-6) lost 4-1 to Mary Hardin-Baylor to open the event, then beat Central Arkansas 3-2 on Friday. On Saturday, the match between Tarleton State and Texas A&M-Kingsville had three delays and lasted about five hours, with the Javelinas winning 4-1. Tarleton State’s final scheduled match against Sam Houston was canceled due to the weather.
The highlight of the weekend was Friday afternoon, with Tarleton State winning Courts 1, 2 and 5 to knock off the Bears. Hayden Huber and Bella Parayno played on Court 1 for the first time in that match, defeating UCA’s Anna Linskey and Natalie Blum 21-18, 21-18. Allison Bryant and Candace Ceballos defeated Madelyn White and Allison Heck 21-15, 21-15, on Court 2. On Court 5, Tarleton State’s Angelina Linke and Sofia Bendele beat Liliana Irizary and Audrey Cathcart 21-10, 21-17. UCA’s Ella Layzell and Brooke Sharp defeated Tarleton State’s Salome Galvez Lira and Christian Mitchell 21-19, 21-13, on Court 3. The Bears’ Ella Weilert and Chandler Lawrence also beat Tarleton State’s Taylor Orris and Emily Vickers 21-15, 21-19.
On Saturday in the nearly five-hour match, the Texans and Javelinas duked it out, with Tarleton State dropping three three-set matches, all by two points. Galvez Lira and Orris earned Tarleton State’s victory on Court 4 21-18, 24-22 over Kate Wozniak and Elizabeth Williams. Courts 2, 3 and 5 went three sets. On Court 2, Kalani Vasquez and Laura Betsa defeated Bryant and Ceballos 19-21, 21-16, 18-16. On Court 3, Emma Daugherty and Kastyn Hoffman defeated Vickers and Mitchell 17-21, 21-18, 15-13. On Court 5, Clara Presmanes-Garate and Kamryn Briggs defeated Linke and Bendele 21-18, 22-24, 15-13. On Court 1, Liana Huesca and Rylan Pollard defeated Huber and Parayno 21-16, 21-19.
Huber and Parayno earned the lone victory for Tarleton State over UMHB, beating Julianna Green and Shelbee Adkins 21-15, 21-18.
Tarleton State will be back in action next week in Monroe, Louisiana, taking on Missouri State, Stephen F. Austin and ULM on March 13-14.
