ARLINGTON – Tarleton State Women’s Tennis picked up its first win over a Western Athletic Conference opponent on Friday, winning on the road at UT Arlington 4-1 at the UTA Tennis Center.
Sophomore Maria Castano picked up wins in both singles and doubles, both being at the No. 1 position. Seniors Ximena Morales and Emma Persson, the WAC Doubles Team of the Week this past week, also picked up victories in both singles and doubles.
Castano and freshman Aya Ishii helped the Texans start fast with a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles, with Morales and Persson following up with a 6-3 victory on Court 2 to give the Texans the first point. Castano followed suit with her first bagel of the season and only dropped two games in the second set en route to her fourth singles win of the year.
UTA responded with a win at No. 6 singles to make it a one-point match, but Persson’s dominating 6-1, 6-3 victory on Court 3 helped the Texans get closer to the team win. After winning 6-3 in the first set, Morales fell behind in the second set. Digging deep, Morales stormed back and completed the comeback 7-5 in the second set against Sofia Selle to give the Texans the win.
“I’m happy with the team’s effort today. We got off to a strong start in doubles and carried that play over to singles to get the win,” head coach Elianne Douglas-Miron said. “Maria and Emma played high-quality tennis today. They stuck to their plans and really committed to all the hard work they have been putting in practice. Ximena also had another gutsy performance. Rallying back from being down in the second set and clinching the win was great to see. We continue to work as a team to keep improving every match and I look forward to seeing them play on Sunday.”
Tarleton State will play a neutral site match against UTRGV in Austin on Sunday at 5 p.m. at the Austin Tennis Academy. The Texans are back home at the Tarleton State Tennis Facility on Tuesday at 11 a.m. against Hillsdale College.
