TUCSON, Ariz. – Tarleton State Beach Volleyball knocked off San Francisco in convincing fashion, 4-1, on Saturday to highlight its two-day run at the Arizona Invitational in Tucson on Friday-Sunday, hosted by the Arizona Wildcats.
The Texans (5-11) went 1-3 on the weekend, narrowly falling against UTEP to end the event, 3-2, with four of the five matches going three sets. Tarleton State lost both matches on Friday 5-0 to Missouri State and Arizona.
Tarleton State’s typical Court 5 pair of Angelina Linke and Sofia Bendele went 2-1 on the weekend, beating San Francisco’s Nad Murray and Scarlett McClung 21-14 21-19, then UTEP’s Iana Loera and Al Gonzalez in a three-set thriller 23-21, 17-21, 15-11. They lost their first match against the Wildcats’ Logan Kaneshiro and Jaycee Fixsen 21-13 21-19.
On Court 4, Taylor Orris and Salome Galvez Lira went 2-2 on the weekend, with wins against USF’s Mahila Priestley and Burkleigh Smith 23-21 21-19, and UTEP’s Mia Theisler and Evelina Krieva 21-17 10-21 15-11. Their losses came to Missouri State’s Manuela Niemeyer and Taylor Germann 21-17 21-19 and Arizona’s Adri Nieves and Sadie Moore 21-15 21-16.
Tarleton State’s other victory on the weekend came on Court 3 against San Francisco. Camilla Chun and Emily Vickers defeated Lucy Speier and Jacquelyn Strawn 21-16 21-17.
On Court 1, Allison Bryant and Candace Ceballos played all four matches, with its closest match against UTEP’s Madison Hill and Paulina Acuna, a three-set affair. On Court 2, Hayden Huber and Bella Parayno played all four matches on Court 2, its closest loss against UTEP’s Mila Popovic and Kennedy Llewellyn, a three-set affair.
Bendele and Theresa Habrik played a lone match together on Court 5 against Arizona, as well.
Tarleton State is a win short of last season’s program record for single-season wins at six, now in the Texans’ third season of existence.
Across the rest of the Arizona Invitational, Arizona went 4-0 to improve to 15-4. Missouri State went 3-1, suffering its first loss of the season, now 14-1 overall. UTEP went 2-2, now 5-11 overall. San Francisco went 0-4 in the event to fall to 6-11.
The Texans will have two matches this upcoming week, both on Saturday in Lake Charles, Louisiana, at the Sandy Poke Invitational, facing McNeese at 10 a.m. CT and Southeastern Louisiana at 12 p.m. CT.
