EDINBURG – Tarleton State Soccer opened the 2025-26 athletics season for all Texan programs with a bang, blanking UTRGV on the road 1-0 Thursday to earn a season-opening win.
Tarleton State (1-0) remained undefeated against UTRGV (0-1) with its fourth straight win in its fourth season of existence. The Texans also remained undefeated in their season openers all-time, earning their first win following three draws in the first three years. The Purple and White improved to 2-1-1 in the first true road game of a season.
In the 12th minute of the game, Texan senior Stevie Reynolds scored the first goal of the season, with assists to Sammy Schulze and Isa Bergeron-Prejean. Reynolds was the leading goal scorer for the Texans in 2024, but notching her first goal much quicker this season, in the first game compared to No. 6 last year.
Tarleton State utilized two goalkeepers at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex in Edinburg on Thursday, with Mikayla Kendall playing the full first half and Emma Barnes playing the second half. Neither had much action to clean up, however, with a stifling Texan defense allowing just one shot on goal in the game. Barnes earned the save on that attempt.
The Texans had seven corner kicks compared to four by UTRGV, and each team had seven shots.
Tarleton State played 22 of its 27-woman roster in the opener. Senior Kyra Goudzwaard played a game-high 88 minutes, with one shot on goal. Sophomore Grace Berry also had a shot on goal for the Texans.
Next up for the Texans is their home opener on Sunday vs. Houston Christian at 1 p.m. at the Tarleton State Soccer Complex in Stephenville, Texas. Tarleton State is 1-0 against HCU all-time, winning 2-0 on the road last year. It will be a “T-Week Teaser” for the Texans, as they invited all new students to join them at the pitch before T-Week officially kicks off later in the day. There will be free megaphones available for fans on Sunday.
