Tarleton State Men Dominate in Fall Season Rodeo Debut in Alpine

STEPHENVILLE — Tarleton State University’s defending champion men’s team swept the top spots in saddle bronc and bareback riding and added firsts in tie-down roping and steer wrestling to earn a dominating win in the season opening National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association Sul Ross State University Rodeo last weekend in Alpine.

The Tarleton State men accumulated 475 points to outdistance second-place Weatherford College’s 415. The Tarleton State women, paced by six top 10 finishes in goat tying, took second in Alpine, just 20 points behind winner Weatherford College’s 210.

Montgomery Parsons’ 167.5 in saddle bronc riding was not only good for first place, but featured the top score in the long go — an 82.5 — and a finals-best 85. Teammate Cauy Masters took second in the event with his 78-80-158 and Waitley Sharon’s 75-80-155 was good for third. In all, six Tarleton State saddle bronc riders earned spots in the finals, including sixth-place Zane Monnett with a 72-76-148, Cooper Lane with a seventh-place 71-74-145 and Colton Lewis, who finished eighth with his 70.5-60-130.5.

Westen Chandler led a group of Tarleton State bareback riders with his 82-79-161, followed by event runner-up Jace Lomheim’s 79-78.5-157.5, a third-place 76-79-155 from Daxtyn Field and Taylon Carmody in fourth with a two-head 154 on scores of 79 and 75.

Brody Clemons flashed a long-go 8.9 and added a 9.3 in Saturday’s finals for a two-head 18.2 to win the tie-down roping average. Lucca Alvarenga’s 9.1-10.4-19.5 was good for sixth and Travis Staley took seventh with his 8.8-12.5-21.3.

Steer wrestler Kreece Dearing’s 3.9-4.7-8.6 was also good for first.

Brylee Boyce and Tyler Lucero were fifth in team roping, posting a combined 12.1, featuring runs of 6.3 and 5.8 seconds. John Peterson and Cole Wilson finished eighth with their 6.4-16-22.4.

Kaylie Garza posted a 6.5-6.7-13.2 for the goat tying crown in Alpine, followed by Faith Lundberg’s runner-up 6.6-7.1-13.7, a fourth-place 7.1-7.9-15 from Rhiley Montoya, Kenzie Hereim’s fifth-place 7.4-7.9-15.3, Makaylee Fischer’s 7.3-9.9-17.2 in seventh and an eighth-place 6.9-11.9-18.8 from True Glover.

Montoya added a fifth in breakaway roping with her 2.4-3.1-5.5 and Rylee Abel took seventh in barrel racing with a 32.88 total on runs of 16.03 and 16.85.

Both Tarleton State teams will be in action Friday and Saturday at the Cisco College Rodeo.
